Default Can someone help me with a shell press please

Before I go and spend $195 on a Carlo Dona shell press can someone who owns one tell me it's worth it? Zoozis has a shell press for $55 but there's a note that some cleaning up the edges and indents are necessary. Is this true for the Carlo Dona as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm assuming that you want a shell press to make consistent sizes. I did have one (Zooziis) when they first came out but it just wasn't for me. The finished product did not fit my personal parameters of what a shell should look like.

Diane Woodall and Becky Mason have an excellent tutorial on making shells for only $10.00:

You might give this a try and see if it works for you. If not you can always get a press

The shell tutorials from Diane and her sister are very good. I have the shell press from Zoozie and it's easy to use. I do use a tool and slightly indent the top edge for cleanup.

Thanks Mary Beth and Pat! I have the tut but thought a press would be faster. Maybe I'll try Zoozis. Carlo Dona is just soooooo expensive.

Angie
I have the Dona Carlo shell press ...I love it except you have to use 1/16 mandrels ...not sure you may be able to contact the maker for a custom press for a bigger mandrel. Once you play with it and know the right amount of glass needed there just a little excess to melt in or clean up.

I have Amy's (oops, ZOOZIIS) shell press as well. I haven't run into the need to tweak the finished product yet so all is well. The press itself is perfect what what I need it for. Thanks again Amy!

I have Zoozii's and would be happy to sell it for $40.00 delivered. Let me know if you are interested. I just never use it and it is silly to keep it.

I have two sizes of the Dona press and love 'em. I had one problem when I got them, since I make beads in the middle of the mandrel, not the end...the finger that keeps the alignment correct was in the way of the mandrel. I had a machinist friend cut holes 90 degrees from the originals, so the hole is sideways on the shell instead of top to bottom. I also asked him to enlarge it to 3/32" on each. They work beautifully now!

I like to do a little bit of touching up with a razor tool in the divots. Just a light touch is all you need.

I purchased the shell press from Jan and I'll see how I like it. Maybe some day a Carlo Dona one will be in the garage when I have money in my pocket!

You know, Angie. I looked up the Carlo Dona one and I think Zoozii's has more detail.

I love my shell press, I have both the horizontal hole and the verticle, use them both all the time.

One of the nice things about Amy's (Zoozii's) shell presses
is that Amy will customize them for you. She made
mine so that I can lay my mandrel crosswise or
vertical.

I own mostly hers and some of Corinas presses.
Lynnie

BTW I've been teaching Bill (DH) to make beads
as my arm still won't let me do much, (he's getting
good enough to start selling), and he has an easier time
with Zoozii's presses by far.
