Need help with etching please
I know there's some info in past threads but I'll be darned if I can find it. I want to put a color core, encase in clear and then etch but keep small holes (or decals maybe?) clear. Can someone point me in the right direction please.

Are you using a chemical etchant or tumbling/sand blasting?
Either way your going to form some type of barrier on the glass.
vinyl sticker decals can often be cut with a circuit machine or similar tool.
there are also masking agents that can be applied like paint.
I have used masking tape in the past when I had access to a sand blaster.
Using a exacto knife to cut the design took a while but had decent results.
newer tools speed up the process.

Thank you Patty K for a great thread .... good ideas there, And Losthelm, I have the liquid etching solution but am not opposed to buying the cream. I want stars to be clear and the rest of the bead to be etched.

Quickest way I've found to make dots is Etch-All resist in a metal tipped squeeze bottle.

I've had good luck with Elmer's glue. Just painted it on where i wanted the glass to stay unetched.

Nail polish is supposed to work too.
?Use coloured so you can see where you put it on, and to take it off afterwards.

It's water soluble, isn't it? I would guess it'd come off the same way as etch all resist - soak the glass in water for a few minutes and it should loosen right off.

It's funny you ask that, I'm actually working on a new tutorial  It will go into detail on how to do that (the easiest way i've found) with a small guide to etching.

Oh Magma ... your beads are the ones that inspire me to learn this!! You're able to get such wonderful depth. When and where will your tutorial be?? I definitely need it!!

I wrapped geometric bands on a bead once with electrical tape and etched it. I think it would've come out better if I'd have left it in the solution longer. The tape was no problem to get off and it did prevent the solution from etching what was underneath.

Angie, I'm about 70% done All the pictures are finished so it's just a matter of putting everything together, but it will still take me a little while to get it all finalized, maybe a month or so.
Becky, I think I would be a terrible teacher, i'll be too nervous Maybe I can put a camera behind my shoulder and do some videos one day.

If using Elmers, be careful not to bump the coated part too much. I learned the hard way on vessels to lay the coated part down for the first half, then turn it face up for the second half of the etch bath.
Suspending the piece is probably the best idea. I also found it helped to let the glue cure overnight. I never had any trouble scrubbing it off after the etch, as Della said, just use a toothbrush.
