Default the sicence of implosions

Okay now everyone knows what a implosion is but not everyone knows how it works. Like so i thought it would be a good idea to ask the veterans of the glass world how does it work what exactly happens. So that us newbies will maybe be able to better understand so we can create more elaborate and delicate details. Thank you for the info

basically the glass stretches as it gets drooped around the maria, and then sorta folded under when you compress it.

i'm not a vet, and that's about the chintzyest explanation i've ever seen lol, but that's about the size of it i think. too many beers at this point to be more articulate.

When you heat the edges it wants to ball up, (hot glass wants to be round) when you press it down it pushes the hot glass against the colder more solid glass and that makes it flare

Thanks Cosmo

Oh, and sooooo not a veteran

I have to say it was lol but still curious into how people are able to make figures in them instead of just patterns or is that just what they are patterns to form figures?

perhaps what your seeing is some stump sucker work?

oh yea, what NOT to do. when laying a line of cobalt (thin rod) don't push too hard, thus breaking the rod and sending the sharp edge into my middle finger...about 1.5" gash. i thought i'd need stitches (probably do) but good ole locktite 420 (super thin, super strong bond) super glue to the rescue!

i just subscribed to glassline this month, so it's the only issue that i've got. it's not the current mag your speaking of, is it?

these from juba glass?

if that's what your talking about i just stumbled across how to do it a few nights ago. took my a while to figure it out. i've bought 4 of this guys marbles because they're so damn original. very cool to look at close up.

James, Voic did a YouTube for his spiders. Is that the type of figurative thing you mean? The sound kind of goes in and out but there are lots of pics. He used to stop by here.

If so, James, I agree - this is an amazing "Alien" piece! I have tried several times to find information on this technique...not much luck though

ETA: It may be that this design is layed onto a maria - stripe by stripe. Sort of like painting onto the maria using stringers and dots - then clear is added to seal the image and it is then slightly imploded. That's my "guess" at least...

OK, James - I think this may give you a bit of an answer...not a "reveal" by any means, but an indication that our Wicked Glass member has taken much time to develop this amazing technique: http://www.lampworketc.com/forums/sh...06#post4004906

For all it's worth, I completely admire and respect Wicked's fab designs! As an artist as well, I yield to any personal desires to keep "techniques" and "trade secrets" just that - PRIVATE! I would be first in line if he ever decides to share his technique in tutorial format, but for now I figure we can just keep enjoying his photoing and sharing of his amazing creations...

And dreaming!

I agree i enjoy the idea of trying to figure out how he did it or taking the stride to look for the answer and maybe making my own method in that madness. People like that put their work up to tease us and to make us push ourselves not be as good but to better in our own ways. as artists we should admire their work but not copy it stay true to ourselves learn our own ways. If we dont then you get boring repation.

I think what Christian is doing with those particular pieces isn't an implosion. He's called them "fakies" in the past. I'm not sure what he's doing exactly but if you look at some of them closely you can get an an hint of a possibility of an inkling of some of what's involved.

They look like tube implosions to me. That's where the thin line with the fume around it comes from.

I think the glass zones idea is one to try i say the same method but blow a then buble overthe desgined area. Also maybe instead of a large maria maybe a large blown bubble flattened on one end then covered in a thin coat of clear then imploded

Yeah except he said they're not really implosions. It's all very confusing.

Yes Chris, very confusing but mysterious and wonderful! If nothing else, this gets the creative juices flowing and ideas just pinging like crazy, right? It's awesome!

My best guess is something like a planet marble, pre-made flameworked elements assembled and separated by clear as necessary (possibly on a bubble, or a maria) gently worked in and lensed. The order and specifics however, are where the magic comes in... and make no mistake about it, Christian is a virtuoso

We may also be getting some confusion from terminology. Some people refer to that technique as condensing. IIRC a point is opened up to a bell shape and fumed inside. Then various designs are placed over the fume, or not, and the bell is condensed and twisted. Then a backing design etc is placed on the gather, worked in and the whole thing rounded up. --simplified version --

yeah terminology is probably not the problem. Condensing is more of a hollow form-oriented term, ie: I/O work. Designs on the outside of a bubble which is then condensed are implosions.

Maybe Wicked could come and clarify the difference

As for the original question/comment...

I think of implosions like those "water snake" toys

You push down, and the stuff on the inside gets pulled towards the outside, in the case of an implosion, dragging the color along with it.
