Default Putting real feathers in blown ornaments

Has anyone done this? I am not talking about after the ornament is cooled, but maybe putting them in, sealing the end and not kiln annealing? Is this possible?

I would think that the heat would burn the feathers.

I would too but I keep seeing them in stores with no visible holes to add the feather after. They are glass and being imported from China.

they have to be using epoxy or something like that to close a hole. Probably under the loop.

Your (related but not exact) mystery of the day: How did our Jo do this?

It's not a feather but it's an interesting pendant- no glue!

I'm guessing they had to put the premade loop on with epoxy to close a hole.

On the popcorn, I wonder if you could put an unpopped kernel in at the end, then heat the heat pops it, or you do it in the microwave after anneal?

Jo Wu made the pendant and left the bottom tip open, tucked a kernal up inside and then used the flame to just close the tip. Later on, she held the pendant in long tweezers and put it over a gas stove to pop the kernal. We had a lot of fun trying to figure out how she did it but she did tell me when I asked.

I thought it would be fun to share.

Look at the direction the feather goes, they made the ornament, left a small length of tube at the top and let it bench cool, or annealed them.

The hole for entry only has to be as wide as the spine of the feather since they compress down nicely. Pop in the feather, then carefully heat only the tubing bit at the top to shape into a loop and you're done.

This is doable! This is a gross dirty feather I found in my yard. I made the blown shape, threw it under a fiber blanket since this was just a tester, then inserted the feather and melted the tip off.

To do this nicely I will need clean pretty feathers. and I will put the empty blown ornaments into my kiln to anneal, then I will insert the feather and quickly just melt off the tip to close. So most of it will be annealed.

Really nice feathers can be bought at fly fishing stores... Just FYI... Usually in perfect condition too unlike hobby stores..
