Default 304 Stainless bottle stopper?

I'm new to making bottle stoppers and saw where nilesbottlestoppers.com was recommended by a few of you. I found another site that was cheaper and ordered stoppers from them: stainlessbottlestoppers.com My neighbor is a machinist and said I did not get food grade stainless as advertised. He put a magnet on the stoppers and said it would not stick to 304 grade stainless steel.

My question is; does it really matter what grade they really are? I like their prices but don't want returns from my customers.

304 is perfectly safe for food and is non magnetic. 430 is not generally used for food and is magnetic. Not very resistant to rust either.

If it's not 304 it's more susceptible to corrosion due to acids in the wine

Thank you, and so if the magnet sticks, does that mean it will rust in wine and maybe I should return the stoppers and ask for a refund before I even use them? How can a company advertise a specific material if it's not? never mind, I think I know the answer to that!!

ask them what alloy is used.
304 can get magnetic in some situations, usually less so than 4** series steel.
you may have noticed this with butter knives in restaurants.
430 series steel is usually more expensive and used in some brewing equipment like the pipe flanges.
