Default Torch use for food...

I know this is a little off-topic, but I'd like to make creme brûlée and don't have a food torch. I realize I could use the broiler, but can I use my Hothead with MAPP gas for this?

Thanks!

Absolutely! MAPP gas is simply propane with an additive to make it burn hotter.
You might want to back off a bit so that some of the unburnt gas doesn't embed in the sugar as it caramelizes. It's also going to be way hotter than a creme brulee torch.

Small, tight, oxy-rich flame, big thick gloves, be very, very, very careful.

Thanks for the recommendations. I think I'll bring the creme brûlée out to the garage where I have my glass setup. That way I can set them on the workspace and not worry about setting my kitchen on fire!
