I use a respirator with enamels, the $40 one that is good for particulate filtering.
And I only started using it after reading all the cautions here on LE.
LE is a great resource!!!

I don't use a mask while working at the torch.

I think anything that a mask would filter out should be caught up in the air flow coming from behind me going into my ventilation system.

If I were working with powdered frit or enamels I would put one on though.

I will suggest that you get one just to have on hand.
When a person gets ready to do something that might call for a mask having to stop and go and buy one really shuts down the creative thing.
Also, when it is one of those questionable situations where you think maybe you ought to, the hassle of pulling it out form where you keep it is a whole lot less than the hassle of going out to buy one and we humans tend to think we can probably do without it if is not right handy when the need comes up.

Kind of like smoke detectors. We only think about the need for them after the time when we should have had them on hand.

Always and I have a fantastic vent system. Foolish to think that all gases are caught up and sent out thru the vent system with or without back up air.
