Default January 2009 Bullseye tips thread

Found some really cool effects yesterday with the opaque colors. Now if I can get them off the camera, onto the old computer to photoshop, and back onto the new 'puter to upload I'll share....

Well now they're on my USB drive, and I'm looking for a flashlight to find the usb connection at the back of the old computer. "somebody" has stolen the hub piece...

No,lol, he's going to have to show me how to connect it first. There is no usb connection on the back of the old computer, and I don't see how our hub hooked into it.

I had noticed before that the opaques (turquoise was the only one I'd verified) can tend to separate interestingly in the presence of other colors.

So, since I had no torching plan, I played

First there was this. Bluestone with copper green luster. I was amazed at how well the copper green separated the bluestone. Here are two pictures. The end is a little jagged because I had to beat on it forever to get if off the mandrel.

So then I tried more lusters with sterling

amber luster

green luster

blue?? or brandy luster

See how the extra dots in the center separate into colors too???

Back to bluestone and copper green

I really like how there's a pale line that goes along the edge of the darker line

And one in the style of Sarah's think pink tut.

This is with periwinkle blossoms. The top is blue luster, green luster in the middle, and a bit of brandy at the bottom for the brownish color

You can get a little separation of turquoise opaque on cranberry, but not as much as you can on the lusters. NOTE: I have not tried bluestone or sterling on cranberry, so they may work better.

Working conditions- hot

You get more separation the hotter you work them, including multiple heating cycles.

Enjoy!!

I have not been able to get Cranberry to react like Rubino does, unfortunately. Try the opaque blues with purples

My BE tip

I always hated going back and forth to the BE Torch Tips to see what colors would work nice together when making florals so I put together this lists awhile back. This is not to say I haven't put a transparent color over a base they listed as a reactive but you do take the risk of it developing the dreaded dark edge on your petals. Some colors always do it, some it's a hit and miss thing so I keep this list near my torch. You can also sometimes get away with using the reactives together if you cover the base color completely with the reactive transparent.

These colors play nice together.

White base use

Pinks
Turquoises
Caribbean Blue
Aquas
Kelly & Emerald Green
Violet striker
Sunset Coral
Gold Purple
Lustres

Vanilla Base use

Reds
Oranges
Yellows
Ambers
Garnet
Coral Orange
Chartreuse

Me too!

I created a bullseye color chart, which I need to update with the new colors. I condensed the info from the torch tips and put it on the color chart. There is a place to add a small piece of a rod for each color. I have them hanging close to my work space. This way I can pick up rods and glance to see if they will react. I will post a link to them when I have them updated.

I got a couple pm's asking for the colors from Sunday's gallery post.

Here are the beads

And the recipe is sand dune, covered with silver foil. burnish in. Heat it in really well. Change flame to slightly reducing. Heat well. Change to oxidizing flame reheat. Encase with reactive clear. You can get lots of variation on reactions by altering flame chemistry before encasing.

This bead has the same base to it.

There were two reactive "colors" in the odd lot releases a few months ago. There's a clear and a milky (somewhat transluscent) white. They react with silver, copper, luster, aurora glasses in interesting ways. It can react with silver to give a yellow/orange, with copper containing colors to give a red color or outline.

The clear is really fun to work with. It doesn't burn at all. I've used it for regular encasing sometimes because I tend to work hot, and it doesn't boil or scum at all - even if my rod isn't perfectly clean.

Lynda,

Those are AMAZING!!! I especially like the sand dune with reactive clear pair. It's incredible to get the look of orange frit or enamel on it without using that. Keep up the good work and keep the pictures coming!
