Stripes
Hi everyone! ok these suckers (stripes) are driving me to drink! I have tried over and over and even on my best striped beads the stripes do not come too close to the centers.
Here's what I'm doing:
2-3 wraps to form a small disk.
place dots on edge and slightly melt in
wrap clear over the dots
slowly melt in.
The dots "should" form the stripes as the clear melts in, right? well I don't think this is ahppening. Are my dots too small or am I not using enough clear... or both?
Thanks
Duane

From what I've read, maybe not using enough clear. How may wraps of clear are you putting on there? But I haven't tried stripes in quite a while. Now you make me want to give them another session!

Do you have any pictures of the results you are getting? That might help with troubleshooting.

Some people say not to melt the dots in before encasing, but I do. The real trick to stripes I find is to make sure you have a good amount of clear, say two wraps, on top, heat only the clear until it's well on it' way to melting in and most importantly, when you are nearly finished and want to work on the ends, heat the clear from the sides on a slight downward slant to pull the clear toward the mandrel. Without this step, you may get bleeding upwards onto your encasing layer depending on what base glass you used.

Thanks, Kimberly! I'm pretty sure I wasn't adding enough clear. I'll try again and post pics

Some basic principals you can use to your advantage:
Opaque glass, which is soft, likes to float and spread out over transparent glass, which is stiff. Effetre black is really a transparent glass and works well as a base.
Stiff glass can act like a dam and block soft glass from spreading in certain directions (this is useful for making shapes with your dots, like with harlequin beads). Beware that it will try to seep and creep.
Glass likes to travel towards heat, so position your glass in the flame accordingly.

Yes, let's see some pics! I've found 2-3 wraps of clear work best...

Do you mean like the triangle beads? Put dots on the sides opposite of each other? Or dots in the middle of the bead?
In both cases, I melt my dots in first, then put the clear only on top of the dot, like two or three wraps and melt slowly. For the dots on the sides of the beads, my first wrap of clear I wrap in a wavy line, missing all the points. Seems to give me better consistency when I do this.

I've been feeling a little under the weather so I didn't torch last night. I crawled into bed last night around 8:30 and immediately fell asleep!

I always thought stripes were done with centered dots, not side dots...hmm?

Yeah, what she said. Center the dots for the stripes...side dots usually go for petals or some other effect. Is that it, or do you mean dots on the edge of the disc before you melt down, and nothing gets down to where the mandrel is? Lack of clear and heating just on the center of the bead will both do that.

I thought he meant the outer edge of his disk (which would be along the equator of the bead).
