Default How to make a glass "rock"

My boss is a die hard "rock hound". Each employee is planning to surprise her with a special rock for Christmas.

Any ideas on what would make a superb rock out of glass? (am thinking something charcoal colored, pitty...with a gem color layered in?) Have no idea how to obtain that!!

Or any ideas welcomed! Thanks

I think I have some boro rocks with nice colors. I'll have to look for them.

I love rocks!
Agates are pretty easy to make. You could make a hollow one and use clear frit as crystals inside. I made chryscolla beads that were pretty convincing, too.
A lot of matrix is black so make a black wonky bead, add most any clear color blobs on it then etch the black (mask off the clear color).

If all else fails, break down and buy one of these:

there are others but these 3 were my favorites

Wow, thanks for ideas so far.

My DH out of work so I probably couldn't purchase those beauties from Frantz.

I think it would be fun to try something new too. I have tons of boro, 96, and 104

Neptune! It is a dark turquoise that turns grey when the flame in on in the same room. You can see the arrow pointing to the bit of turquoise seen in the "rock."

There was a thread somewhere about pressing a bead into damp sand to make an interesting rock-like appearance a while back. I always thought it would be fun to try.

Make an implosion flower, mark the thing in some manner and roll whole thing in various frits many times, partially melt in each time. when done coldwork a window into the thing above or to the side of the flower.

So pretty, Lara!
I've seen beads that look like rocks. You would use frits and very fine stringers of intense black for the veining. You can do it! Try grays and greens, etc. You could also shape them asymmetrically. Go for it!
In fact, I made a necklace out of some "rocks" I made. Let me see if I can find it....

Here it is...
These aren't etched, but etching would look great!

Karl Taylor did a tutorial for The Flow about making geodes. You would find many ideas there, too.

ETA: I think the tutorial was published within the last three issues of the mag.

Vetrofond painted desert looks like agate, you could do some off mandrel work or beads.

Rock people like rocks. Not to be discouraging if your boss is female. If sh'e's paleo then she likes fossils. Sometimes they just like pretty. I have oodles of quartz clusters and would be happy to sell a few cheap. I even some too big to easily ship. Good luck!

Wow, such great ideas. Love em all! Gorgeous photos and my head is spinning with ideas.

I think I will make some bead rocks for myself & get my boss a real rock.

FosterFire got me thinking and it sounds like my boss is a true paleo & would want an authentic rock or fossil (she even does dinosauer digs for fun!)

I have some awesome ideas for my own to try (the sand one has me intrigued) Am going to play with fire this weekend.

Thanks!
