Default Gold Fuming – Copper or Silver Filler for Best Durability

Other threads have indicated that for gold fuming of boro beads that 22 carat gold adheres better than 24 carat. And some fume silver first and then 24 carat gold for better adhesion.

For gold, 21.6 carat is available in a number of gold coins. And the filler material is either silver or copper. Which filler is the better choice?

Note: As a test, placed two halfs of a broken gold fumed boro bead (22 carat gold leaf) in my pocket with a key. After three weeks have noticed no issue with the gold being burnished off – no scratches – thinning, etc.

You don't want gold with any filler. That will cloud your fuming. You especially don't want anything with copper. It needs to be only gold. I usually use gold bezel wire.

Will give a 22 carat coin a try. The American Eagle 1/10 ounce is 91.67% gold (22 karat), 3% silver, and 5.33% copper.

As with any 22 carat gold IMO there is not much choice in the alloys used. Hopefully the coin will do a lot of beads especially at the price of $148. Plan to pound it down into a thinner piece which will make it easier to snip off a piece for fuming. Where are those $32 per ounce gold days!!

Interesting quote from Sundance Glass.

"The silver will easily stick to the glass.
Pure gold (24 ct) does not want to easily stick to the glass, so....... either
1) Put down a silver coating and then use the pure (24ct) on top of the silver coating OR
2) Use the less pure gold (22ct), the impurities will help the gold stick to the glass.
Each method will actually give you a slighty different effect."
