Oh wow Dawn!!! I am so going to have myself some short shelving like yours. How perfect for frit and small things. I would like a copy of the plans for that. I know you said you could send them to me. The color is perfect I can't wait to see it in person.

How timely a topic!
I have just finished adding more insulation and drywalling my upstairs studio. It's a big room, with low cathedral ceilings- just about 5' high on the low ends. So I have a huge expanse of ceiling, and shorter, odd walls. There are four windows that do bring in a fair amount of light, and a good window in the stairwell that really brightens things up a lot.
At first I thought white or ecru would be good, less conflict with the glass colors, and well, they bring in a lot of color all by themselves.
Then I thought something warmer, more cream or buff. That lead to "oh how I love color". Our house is a bright and engaging palette ranging from tones of the southwest to the hot tropics upstairs. So, like others mentioned, love color, definitely not afraid of it.
I have lots of paint left over from painting the house. Does anyone have good experience mixing in lots more base paint (usually white-like) to create tints for the studio walls?
Once the first floor is finished, hopefully this week, I'll be working on that paint too. But I think I'm going for high intensity there- the boro boys recently repainted their stations in some high intensity color and graphics that look really, really cool! I think it will be perfect for my "Boro Bora Room" theme.

Tracy,
I have the directions & I'll try to scan them and send them to you. If I can't figure it out I'll copy them and give them to you on the 19th. We just changed the plans a bit. The plans called for adjustable shelf's and we made them non adjustable.
I also made mine 3 foot wide. I thought it might be a bit big at first but then I started to put all my stuff on them and it seemed to be ok. I can all ways add another shelf at the bottom if I had too. I guess what I'm saying is go big if you have the space, lol...
Happy New Year!
Julz, your studio sounds wonderful

Thanks, I saw the shelf idea in a Home Depot Magazine. It was not hard to make at all.

Well, it depends really on the light you use. I have bright halogen lights that show true colors. Also my work surface is steel in color so I have a 'neutral' background. I know a lot of people who have painted their studio... bright yellow, lavender purple...

Wall color doesn't affect the color of the glass while I'm working (I have a brightly lit area for torching), but rather when I'm selecting colors from the storage area. I'll think I have one thing, but when I get over under the 'true' lighting, it doesn't look at all the same. It's just kind of annoying and makes for a lot of unnecessary trudging back and forth.

Julz, I once painted my kitchen by mixing all the paint I had left over from the other rooms. They where hunter green, mellow yellow, and a light tan and white. The color was a very warm medium green and at the time all I could afford!
Dawn, I have the space so I am going to go big. There are several areas that nothing very wide would work in that this type of shelving would be great.
Tink, my glass storage area is lit and in a white fence post type of system so I don't think that will be a problem. There also won't be much trudging since it will be right next to where I am torching but I still agree with your color choice.

My studio is light cream with a chocolate brown accent wall and a huge computer station that is turquoise. I love the colors.. I think it inspires me just to walk by. I also have a lot of funky paintings that make it wonderful and one of the three walls is mostly windows so between natural light and my halogens the dark paint doesn't matter. White is boring IMO...unless you add a lot of colorful accents!

My studio actually has 2.5 walls in off white and 1.5 in this amazing teal color.

My studio walls are white....because I am in our garage and DH wanted white walls in there. However when ( someday) we build a seperate area for just my stuff I want my walls to be warmer. I have already chosen the color "oblisk" (its a beigy color with warm brown tones) with red and black accents.

Maybe a white wall where the glass is housed and then each one of the rest in something bright?

Just be aware that the colour on the walls will still reflect their colour onto your "stuff"

White walls, grey and yellow drawers, but mostly white. White is neutral, I know what colors I am using, accurately, with no tinge from the walls to alter it.

Mine was repainted white before I moved my studio in there... there's enough "stuff" that the color is fairly hidden - glass rack and shelves on one wall, kiln near another, posters on another - but I like the white. It's the most free-flowing room in the house with "stuff" on the walls, so white's a nice backdrop to calm the madness.

My studio is in my basement. Although I originally wanted bright colors, I went with shiny bright white paneling, white-and-grey marbled ceramic work surface, white floor with scattered grey tiles with a 1" trim along one side in black. I love it.
I have so much stuff in there that the white keeps it looking bright and open despite the clutter of glass and tools and books and beads. My drafting chairs and my kiln are blue. My glass storage units are green. That, and all the glass, give it more than enough color and make the stored glass (on the torching side) and beads (on the jewelry side) the focus of the room.
You can see my recently rebuilt studio here: http://www.barbcohan.com/pages/aboutmywork.php
It's still not finished. I still have to hang my shadowbox-framed bead collection and my collage of eye candy. I will be painting the legs of my workbench white to go with the tile. My studio was not white before. Now that it is, it seems bigger and brighter. I've not regretted my decision for even a second.

Mine is white with classic cement gray floors. Which is why Tonnia swears she is showing up with a paint can.
I had considered brights but couldn't decide between something like teal and a pretty coordinating color or the default of a cool pink and purple. So when in doubt, white won.

I really think the size of your studio makes a big difference when choosing a color or non-color. My studio is periwinkle with white trim and citrus green accents, but it's 18x22 and has 7 large windows. My glass storage and torch are next to a window, so I can see the actual colors with natural light. If my space was smaller, or I had fewer windows for natural light, I'd have gone with different colors. My countertop where my sink is is a soft, granite colored gray, and I probably would have gone with a dove gray on the walls. I have enough natural light so I think I could paint any color. The light makes a HUGE difference when choosing a color.

Good point. The lack of natural light is part of why I went white. And I was afraid if I went with the wrong color it would make the room look even smaller. And lack of courage because I would never have wanted to repaint if it looked bad.

The size is 12x20 but it is in the basement with just the little windows at the top. It is a walk out so I don't understand why someone didn't put a big window in when it was built.

Hey Nancy I think your space would be great with some graffiti. Maybe some big swirls n such. I did this type of thing once in a bedroom and it was fantastic.

I primed in bright white. I hate it. The white is so finite, so limiting when I look around the perimeter of the room. It makes it look so much smaller, and the room is actually 18 x 32. so I know now that I need to use color that makes it look more endless, like I am up in a tree house looking out over the horizon. Aaaah. I can't wait to get it done.
