Do you mean opal yellow? There is a butter yellow that was a softer more pastel yellow but it was pretty similar to regular yellow when I ordered last. Opal yellow is more a cake batter yellow (sometimes), but it varies a lot and can be much darker.

Yes, that's correct, Butter Yellow is indeed 418.

Wasn't there a batch of 418 that was more actually named "butter yellow"? eg, an odd lot that isn't to be repeated?

The mysteries of Effetre - it's been said that there once (many moons ago) was a color called 'Butter Yellow' that really looked like beautiful pale yellow butter.

I've always wished that I could have seen it.

Has anyone tried opaque uranium yellow? I've never tried it but on Frantz website it looks like a very pretty soft yellow. Maybe I'm wrong.

Vetrofond has 2 buttery yellows that I think might interest you, they are in the 'odd' catagory.Sunshine and Banana Cream.

I think I might have some of that...way back from 2003! In a sample pack I got from Auralens when he used to sell Effetre. I'll look tomorrow.

CiM makes a pretty butter yellow called Ghee (which is actually Indian clarified butter). Work it cool.

Yellow Opalino is a nice soft pale yellow, sort of buttery too.

Wow. You can actually see it?

I've still got some, too, and I can't bring myself to use it. I adored it, and it never occurred to me that I couldn't get more (odds etc. didn't exist back then). It was great - a softer yellow than ghee, and very opaque - just a little darker than a real stick of butter.

I fell in love with a Satake bead in butter yellow years ago, and started questing for something similar in the Effetre range. The closest, nicest that I've found is the Vetro Banana Cream. It's a tiny bit too bright, IMO, but with the right color combos it's really close to my idea of pale "butter" yellow.

Ghee is nice, but the more you work it, the more it darkens up. I've gotten anything from pale yellow to a deep gold, to caramel, to a dark cinnamon color. If you want the pale yellow color, work it as LITTLE and as cool as possible.

Since I don't have much experience, and I haven't got a chance to test too many colors out yet, I'll probably sound naive. But all the beads I've seen made with opal yellow -- that's just about the prettiest color of buttery yellow I've seen. What about this color as a substitute, besides the price and maybe the reactivity? I'm butting in here only because I'm looking for a nice butter yellow too. I have just about every other color right now except for really nice pinks and yellows.

Thanks Kimberly,
But how do I know if I am getting a pale batch? Can I order specifically a pale batch?
Actually, it doesn't even have to be a pale butter yellow as long as it is that gorgeous ethereal color I've seen of opal yellow. Is all the opal yellow pretty much like this?

Can anyone tell me WHO makes Opal Yellow? I've been trying to figure that out so that I can buy some. After Kimberly's super twisty tutorial, I've been dying to try it out...

Mary,
Opal Yellow is Effetre (Moretti) . I don't know if any of the others make it. I just ordered some last night from Howaco Glass.

Thanks Jammy...I've found it now at my supplier (thanks to your tip). Ah-ha! It's the price(a bit up there) and the preview of it heated that put me off buying it before! Good to know.

Ahhhh Butter Yellow how I miss that color. Never truly got a replacement, so creamy so rich - I had the pleasure of using it in a class I took at Sundance years ago. I remeber a girl there told me it was an oops. They tried and tried to get more to no avail, it's unortunate I didn't buy them out when I had the chance......

I know what you mean Mary. Sometimes if glass looks pretty in the preview it looks completely different (not so pretty) when you get it. Sometimes if it doesn't look that good in the preview, and you buy it anyway, you are so glad you did because it might turn out to be your very favorite color!

I was going to suggest Vetrofond Lemon Meringue Special ODD Glass Rod 791949; it's a lovely buttery yellow in rod form. But I tested it (just got it the other day), and it came out a pale cream instead. I'm using a hot head, YMMV.

I second banana cream as a substitute. You may be able to mix acid yellow with white and get this color. Ye acid yellow does not have the 'green' that uranium yellow has. I had gotten the awesome old orange that is not out there anymore by mixing one of the reds and yellows. I posted about it a long time ago, but can't remember at this min what the colors were...

Eta: wow after seeing pics I don't think that yellows would work or banana cream. It's more of a yellowish tongue pink. Maybe the tongue pink and an opal yellow mix?
