Formula calls for NS Fools Gold - who sells it?
I just got a great bead tutorial (really a formula book) and a few of the formulas call for NS Fools Gold. I could not find it on Northstar's web site, nor on ABR's site. Anyone know where I can get some? If not, what can I mix NS Steel Wool with the get something close to Fools Gold?

as i recall, fools gold was like a transparent honey-gold colored striking color; like rootbeer, amber purple and a bunch of air bubble were made into one rod. call it 1999 ish?

I've substituted momka's brown glitter. In the example beads in that tutorial, the brown section looked sparkly.

Laurie's Bronze from GA might work as well.

Near as I can tell GlassCraft is the only one selling any, and I think they ask for it special from Abe.
A little goes a long way, make sure you mix it down, and preheat it like it was 104. I like to to drop some in a tube of 12mm tubing to quickly encase it. Just be careful because it'll still be kind of brittle.

Just agreeing with what everyone is saying here:
Laurie's Bronze is an entirely different kind of glass than Fools Gold, and will
not work for the same effects. Right now, the only place to buy
the fools gold is through Glass Craft. Be aware that it is VERY brittle,
and most likely will arrive in pieces. I'm not even exaggerating.
Also, for some reason - the fools gold will not hold the nice gold glittery look
for some people. I can't for the life of me figure out why. I've worked it all
kinds of different ways, but it usually turns out black and sparkly, it loses
all the brown.
For this reason, you might want to keep a few rods of Momka's Brown
glitter around. It's not as intense as Fools Gold, but it stays brown and
sparkly.
If anyone has any "secrets" for working fools gold, whip 'em out. I can't
make it behave for nuthin.

Um...my Laurie's bronze has SO many rocks and air in it, it is pretty much unusable. Every now and then I pull out a rod to give it another go...then end up throwing it back in the closet.
I so wish I had a good pull of the stuff...I've seen some VERY nice work with it.

Mine is perfect and no rocks. Did you buy some that was 2nds? That would
account for the problems.

Nope...it's been a while...It was a brand new REV33 when I got it so I just figured it was a bad batch. I think it was only on the GA site for a day before I picked mine up.
Next time I buy from GA I think I'm going to get a few more rods just to see. It's such a beautiful color...it's worth another look. It just sucks to get 1/2 way through a complex project and finding you missed a rock or two.

Hi folks - I just got back to experimenting and came up with a substitute for NS Fools Gold. I mix about 2/3 to 3/4 Asian Amber with about 1/4 to 1/3 NS Steel Wool. Then I made some 'mixed sapphire cubes' (beads) from Catherine Ondrey's 'Max N Me Beads' Vol. II recipe book. I just took them out of the kiln and I have a really cool sparkly gold!

New formula for 'Fools Gold' - When I mixed 1/4 steel wool with 3/4 Asian Amber and then used it in some beads they all cracked after a very careful annealing cycle. So, I went with about 1/10 steel wool to 9/10 Asian Amber, used it on beads that were covered with clear and NO cracks, AND I got a real nice sparkly gold color.
