I'm so glad you guys are still finding this thread helpful. There's really a lot of great advise in here and not just from me.

Here's my latest set. There's probably about 3 beads in here that are Terra, and probably about 3 that are Multicolor Dark, but the rest of the beads are Raku.

And here's some close ups of the same set.

I just re-read most of this thread...too cold to torch today! Thank you Dawn and others for all the helpful tips. I can't wait to get to the studio to try some more raku and MCD.
Dawn, how do you get that beautiful rose pink color stringer on the ends of the barrels?
Here's a set I made a couple weeks ago...got pretty good color, but I think I used too much clear!

The rose colored raised stringer you see is actually Multicolor Dark. It always turns a reddish purple when I leave it raised. It kind of looks like mud going in the kiln, but always strikes to a pretty color in the kiln.

Your beads are beautiful! And the thick clear really adds sparkle!

Thanks Dawn! I think I will try the MCD again. I guess I was expecting it to look like that when it went in to the kiln!

I didn't get nearly that amount of color, but I did get some. My first try last night, the bead on the left was first, then I read the page I had printed out with the info on getting the color to bloom, and tried again with the black base.
I'm excited to try again now

and the other side

Dawn that glass just sings for you! Talk about heat control. My raku can't carry a tune

Default raku question

Hello Dawn,
Your instructions are very helpful and I have had some good colours, but it is a bit erratic. Can you tell me whether 'step 2' is in the high oxygen flame, or a neutral flame, or doesn't it matter?
thanks!

It shouldn't matter. I use a low neutral flame. The important thing is that you don't let the bead reduce.

Hi Dianne,

The first three sets pictured there are not encased. In the last set, about half the beads are encased. I use both frit and stringer to decorate the beads and my favorite size of frit is the very small size #0.

I buy my raku in tasmania. Austaralia from a place called Affordable Inspirations. Their prices are great & they ship anywhere. The Raku is from Reichenbach & the 96coe is sold in rods (1/4lb or 115g ) & are a bit over $8 Australian & the frit (in all sizes) is $2.73 for 30g. Hope that helps anyone. Happy lamping & may you dream up fantastic designs.

What a great thread!
I made a document for myself out of all the information to have it next to my torch

Here is my first attempt to make some Raku toppers

I did it with a twistie of raku and black on a black base. because my twisties get more even I started twisting it in the flame to get it smaller when reaching the middle of the top so my twistie gets thinner.
I had a big car accident and after this I don't have a good control over my hands anymore but this made me look at lampworking in a total different way and started to make more "organic" things than flowers or other fine work (which I can't anymore). It maybe sound strange to say, but I'm happy to have this horrible car accident, it made me look in a different way to the glass and I found a style that fits me even better!
(this is the car I was in)

I'm glad you're still here, able to make beads and that it gave you a different prospective about glass but I hope you don't mind if I keep you in my prayers for a full recovery so you can make the beads you used to also. The toppers are beautiful! Angelique

It's been 7 years and I've finally figured out Raku. Thanks to a friend. I read this thread and read it over a bunch of times and couldn't get it. I'm so thrilled with my results. I will try and get some photos and post them.

Thanks everyone for contributing to this thread!

Good heavens Marjolien, I'm glad you're alive and still able to torch despite some difficulty with your hands! What a nasty car accident.

I still can't get Dawn-level colours from Raku but I can get some decent colours from it nonetheless.

Thank you and thank you! My little secret is the base glass, Painted Desert, and the press is of course from Bavarian Beads. I think I might have to make one of those for myself.
