Default Red Copper Green vs Copper Green

I recently had a debate with someone about "red" copper green and copper green.
Are there really two different varieties?

There are also perfectly green rods that have red streaks after working it in the flame. Copper Green has a tendency to do that so keeping an eye on each new batch is important for me. I don't like the red streaks.

I love red copper green, if you partially cover it with silver foil, you get red and green, (green where the foil was)

Pictures would be nice to see what the difference is other than just rod.

YAY! I LOVE being right. Thank you guys!
Sheila I would also like to see what you are talking about too! I have 3 different batches of copper green. One is solid green, one has red rings in the rod and one is kind of funky looking.
SilverLilly, do you have any pics of the blackish one? It sounds cool

Oh and Amber I love the red streaks and have a couple batches that get no red, so if you ever want to trade, let me know.

Sorry the first one is so small. I was having trouble with the uploader.
You can see the reddish color on the ends of the beads. The newer batches aren't as good as the ones from about 3 years ago.

If you encase red copper green you get pretty pinks and aquas.

No picture right now, and I shut down the torch for today, but I can make one tomorrow and post it the day after.

I love these - Sheila do you mind sharing how you got the cool reactions? Did you put silver on the copper green plus silvered ivory stringer, and reduce?

My copper green is from about 4 yrs ago and I can't get it to do anything - even reducing does nothing. What am I doing wrong?

It's just Red Copper Green, rolled in foil, burnish and burn off. Then decorate with the SIS and pop in the kiln. I don't reduce it and I use a fairly high oxy flame on all my beads.

Saving this for future reference.

Sheila, those beads are simply stunning! Are they etched at all?

I love those reactions and I'm jumping for joy that all my red copper green is old stock!

They're all etched. I will say, these beads look different if they are not etched.

If you want any of the copper greens shiny after annealing, soak them in toilet bowl cleaner.

I have red copper green and I have green copper green. I have a tendency to use a bit more oxy than neutral flame. I found I turned all my copper green to green that way. If I changed the torch atmosphere to very slightly reducing I got red copper green. With just a little bit of play I found I do this reliably. I haven't tried all the batches though, so this just applies to the 3 batches I have. When I was teaching we did this in class and it worked for my students as well. Can't hurt to try it when you have a spare minute or 2.

Just did a demo for Susan, so I have a witness. My red copper green went green in an oxy flame and didn't go back to red until I changed to reducing.

I'm with you here. I heat up the end and look for the patina to turn red. I have quite a collection of slightly red Copper Green.!

I was just editing photos and found this one, straight red copper green on the end caps. The dots too, on Lauscha Olive.

I have both the red and the green. But I also have what was called 'Red Copper Brown' No idea of the number, though. It's lovely with the green.

I made a few this morning and found that I need to wait until it had just started "sparking" and then I was getting the pretty colors.
