Default Help For Husband

My beautiful wife just purchased a dual fuel torch (surface mix?) and I need to buy her the correct regulators. I have no idea which or where to find them. Can anybody help a poor dumb guy? (The wife promises not to read this thread so all info will be secure.)
Thank you,
Lost In Leesburg

Any set of quality gas welding style regulators will work....

If you are using tanked oxygen, standard welding style oxygen regulator will work...

IF you are using a oxygen concentrator (re applied medical unit) for oxygen supply a oxygen regulator is NOT requires as oxygen concentrators are self regulated (internally)...

If you are using propane as a fuel, any standard welding style ACETYLENE regulator will work.... Yes I said ACETYLENE regulator... Its standard for gas welding and cutting but acetylene burns to dirty for glass work so we use propane... Using a acetylene regulator for propane is pretty much standard as the fuels are fuels ( as far a regulator is concerned) and pretty much similar so propane does not have any negative effect on internal parts of acetylene regulator and acetylene regulator has proper connector on input to connect to propane tank.

Be aware the outputs connectors on acetylene regulator are left hand thread and only connect to red fuel hoses if you are using standard welding hose, and oxygen regulator output connector is standard right hand thread for oxygen (green hose)

Some further reading....

Try to stay away for cheap imported regulators (India-China)and buy quality brand name...

Some brand names: Smith, Radnor, National, Harris there are a few more but they do not come to mind at the moment (brain freeze) ... Stay away from unmarked or no name regulators.... Local welding supply will probable have good quality units if you do not want to buy online ( local welding or glass shop can also give better support if you have problem with regulator)..

Be aware the is two different quality twin hose uses in welding industry "type T" and "type R" ... Type "T" is certifies for any fuel use (good with propane) and type "R" is a restricted use for ACETYLENE ONLY. Using type "R" hose with propane will shorten life of hose and make it brittle and crack and leak at a very young age compared to type "T" which is certified for ALL FUELS... (Yes its all about materials used to manufacture hose)...

As Dale point out, a standard single stage acetylene regulator will work fine for your propane fuel. If using natural gas at 11 WC then no regulator is needed.

This happens to be a AirGas unit, but Air Liquide, Victor and others will also work and are supplied by welding supply shops. And check Graig's List for used or stolen regulators.

There are also a number of glass supply firms that carry regulators.

Thanks-welding regulators I understand & we have an excellent welding shop just up the road (not to mention our son is studying welding at tech school.) Guess I should have realized that regulators are regulators but didn't want to make a mistake.

just want to add...MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE LP TANK OUTSIDE ALL THE TIME!

Do not bring it in an enclosed area even when using it.

You can read more about how to use and how to run you LP here.

Your wife is a lucky woman to have you helping her with this new set-up.
