Lampwork Plant Spikes
Hi! Here is the first question I’ve ever posted! 🤗
I had the idea to make plant spikes by making my sculptural animals on the ends of my mandrel without bead release. This would make the mandrel the “spike” and the annealed result would be the plant ornament/spike. Do you all see anything wrong with is idea? I value your comments in advance!

I have some I made when I started that were meant to be beads, but were stuck. I think others have also, and mine are still on there intact

The only thing I see that could potentially be an issue is that mandrels and glass aren't really compatible and there may be issues the next day, week, year. I've made many things on the end of a mandrel with bead release, cleaned it up after annealing and epoxied whatever in the hole.
Up to you of course, I just feel better doing that.

Many thanks for your comments and suggestion! Eileen, now I remember making a bead without bead release years ago and I threw the whole thing away because I was so embarrassed! it was sure stuck hard, though! Rebecca, I see what you are saying. Make the spike ornament with bead release and then insert a nice fresh mandrel with epoxy to secure it. I think I’ll try both ways!
Any other suggestions out there?

I do this to keep the roaming cats and squirrels from sleeping in my planters and crushing the flowers. It works well.

I make a bead on the mandrel and then decorate the mandrel with colored wire, big metal spacers, etc.

Thanks, Eileen.
Many of my sticks end up as permanent 'flowers' in indoor plant pots. People love them.

A friend of mine has been doing this for years and years. I don’t think she’s had problems with cracking.
