Default CIM Gellys Sty

As I've mentioned on another thread, I make miniature marbles, and some of the colors I use are very specific as they have to be able to show color at around 2mm thickness. Unfortunately I've run slap out of Pink and the best one that I've ever used was Gellys Sty and I can't seem to find any in the usual places. Anybody know where to get a rod or two of it, or know of another pink that would have the same pigment strength? There was another Pink that worked ok, but it's probably been a decade or more since I've seen it and I don't remember what brand/color it was but it turned yellowish when heated just like Gellys Sty does.

Gelly’s Sty is out of production, out of stock, and really sought after, and really expensive. Your best bet is to get it from an individual selling off their glass. I would expect to pay at least $100/lb unless you find someone that is not aware of current value. I don’t use much pink so am not aware of a good substitute

Have you considered going with some of the COE 96. Or even Bullseye? There's some really pretty pinks in those companies.

The Reichenbach and Kugler 96 COE colors also have incredibly high color saturation, so may be a great option for the mini-marbles.

I have some! How much do you want? Maybe we can work out a little trade as I'm not interested in $$.

Yeah it was expensive even when it was in the shops, man it sucks that they quit making it though. It is a spectacular color. I remember seeing somewhere that CIM isn't making any glass right now, but I have no idea if that's accurate, I emailed them directly but haven't heard anything back from them. Maybe if they get enough people asking about it...

I've used other glass for the miniatures, occasionally. The stiffest glass I've ever used was the Custard Glass cullets, not sure what the COE of it is, but it seems very similar to a bottle glass. I'm sure I could still make them with a 96, but I know nothing of the color palettes for those. I guess the best question would be, what is the most similar color to Gellys in 96? Not too concerned with price or brand as long as it will stay pink.

That was the last of the Gellys Sty I had, and if I had known it was out of production, I'd still have these LOL

Just two rods, one for making minis and one for a stash until I find a suitable substitute for it would be awesome, I'd take more if you have a pile of it or something lol

Let me melt a couple of 96 colors and show them. It is really hard to get a true idea of their colors from the website photos

That would be totally awesome of you, I hate to put you through any trouble over it though. If it stays pink when it's pulled really thin, I guess similar to like cobalt does for blue, it might work. I was looking through some of the Bullseye colors after reading your post and that 'Petal Pink' was a common one but it just doesn't look like it has that umph. There were some cranberry pinks but they were way too red... Sigh.
Man I wish I had known they were going to quit making it, I remember telling my wife to put a couple rods of it back several years back because it was so expensive and we only ended up getting a single rod of it. She didn't look at the price and had a handful of rods of it, should have kept my big mouth shut LOL

Kugler's 'opal dense rose' looks promising, pulling sheet glass into stringers is going to learn me some new techniques for sure. Glass is glass though, and I've done a lot crazier things to get other colors. Wife made me sell our Fenton Custard Glass Compote Candy Dish because she wouldn't let me smash it
Reichenbach's R-167 Hot Pink also looks like a winner... https://ebbatchcolor.com/Reichenbach...-167-Hot-Pink/ A guy from that place is going to be calling me tomorrow anyway to talk about getting some other stuff, might see if I can score a sample of that one!

Glasscolor.com (Olymic Color Rods) sells Reichenbach lampwork cane. Wouldn’t that be the easiest thing for you to use? And seriously - don’t judge it by the color samples on the web pages.

DH has some translucent pink that to my eyes looks very similar. I don't know if it would work for your working style though as I think it is a striking color. But they are usually pretty easy to strike. The older one they had was not.

That Rbach looks like a winner, wow

I was just looking at their page right before I read your reply, I think 96 will be fine for miniatures. I once had a customer that wanted minis made from a Heineken bottle, so 96 should be a breeze LOL

DH Flora is beautiful stuff, also someone suggested CIM Dollhouse Milky but I think it's going to be a little pale, that gellys really had me spoiled I guess LOL
I've never used any of the enamels, can you just cram some white into a little pile of it and stir it up or is it just for surface application?

I will sample the colors below for you. All are Reichenbach lampwork cane from Olympic Color Rods. Also, a picture of the ends. This is what you can’t glean from their color samples. So my plan is to make a tiny bead with a piece of stringer pulled from the rod. Does that work?

man those are nice colors. Reichenbach really needs to step up their sample photo quality.

oh my gosh those are gorgeous. 96 though right? I long for da pinks & purples!

I've tried to use enamel for coloring and they do make for interesting stringers but it would take a lot of mixing to get a strong color and not very strong at that. When you use the stringers, they look like watercolor, nice way to do flowers. But i imagine that the little balls would be marbled too.

When my friend and I first ordered a bunch of colors, she made the most awesome sample beads and offered them to OCR to use for their lampwork cane for free. Never heard from them. And I have some transparents that are only good for hollows. They are much too saturated for lampwork.

Yes, 96. They also have some nice 104 colors, but those are slow to be restocked. Lots are out of stock currently.

I think it's Lauscha, per Flame Dame's page. As far as I know Reichenbach is still going, but focused on their blowing and furnace glass. I was told that lampwork cane does not get high priority if they are busy with the stuff they sell the most of. I can imagine little runs of cane do not make sense vs. kilos of rod and cullet.

Wow, those are pretty. Is one of them 'R-167 Hot Pink'? I'd definitely appreciate anything you're willing to contribute to my Pink quest, as long as they aren't too thick, say 2mm-ish, it should give me an idea as long as they don't go transparent on us.
I'm pretty sure it was Lauscha that stopped production, seems like I remember something about lead contamination but don't quote me on that. When they started trying to ban gas stoves here, I told the wife glass artists and manufacturers might be on the same hit list eventually.

Do you guys remember a 'Dusty Rose' or something similar to that by Effetre, back around maybe 2004ish, maybe even late 90's. Real similar to some of the 'coral' colors that are out now. It was a sort of a rose color with a rough texture that would turn mud gray when it was hot, and then back to the rose color as it cooled. They quit making it and I went through some kind of withdrawal, it was an amazing color as well.
We should start a glass memorial for colors like that.

Yes, one is Hot Pink

Dusty Rose was a coral batch variant, 591420 Dusty Rose. It was a nice one. They still make 591420 - it’s just different every time

Default CIM Gellys Sty

Double Helix has just come out with a beautiful opaque pink, COE 104. It’s the closest thing I’ve found to Gellys Sty.

Hope this helps!

Are you talking about the 'Oracle Double Pink'? It does look awful close to Gellys, I may have to get a rod and try it. If anyone else here already has some of it and pulls a really thin stringer, I'd be interested in a well back lit pic of it. It's always Pinks, Reds, and yellows that give me such a fit. I swear I think there was another Pink that used to work, it was a long time ago, but I do remember it would turn yellowish when hot like Gellys does.
CIM does so many 'limited runs' of stuff, if you find something you like of theirs I guess you should get as much as you can of it.
Big thanks to lenora!!

I just bought some of the double pink and labeled it ready to go in my bins but I won't be able to get on the torch for a little while. If you message me your address I'll cut off a few inches and stick it in the mail to you so you can test it.
