Default Long Large Hole Beads

Can anyone offer any tips on how to make a 2" long, large hole (3/4 mandrel) bead?

Thanks,

Candace

From my experience, it will be almost impossible to get off the mandrel once it is made. I make a lot of beads on the larger mandrels and have found that anything wider than a half inch is a waste of time and glass.

Thanks, Julie. That's interesting. I've seen it done. It's just my first time doing it myself.

Anyone who was able to pull it off, please let me know.

Thanks.

I make them all the time. It takes a little practice. Make sure you have a nice coating of bead release. I don't have any fancy release mixes, just straight Fusion bead release. Heat control is the key.

Nancy I have been trying for a long time with results that are not yet acceptable to me. Can you share more about your statement that "heat control is the key?" thanks

any long bead, weather they have a large hole or not, require that they be bathe in the flame evenly. While making the bead, don't let the one end cool off too much while working on the other end. Once you are done with the bead, before you put it in the kiln, give it a good soak in the flame without distorting it to make sure the heat is even throughout the bead. The most important thing that I've found is that you also begin with a good coat of bead release on your mandrel.

Now, this is what has worked for me. I'm sure that there are other ways. I make 5" and 6" handles for knives, and rarely have a problem.

Hope this helps, and hopefully others chime in with their hints.
