I have made quite a few of them. There are a couple ways.
1. Take a gather of clear and use a tool to put grooves in it all the way around. I use a stump shaper and put maybe 6-7 grooves around it.
2. Take a gather of clear and lay stringers on it.
Then heat, twist, and pull down.

If you are making separate nibs that will be attached to a pen: after pulling the tip down and before you remove the rod, use it as a punty to remove the rod from the other end. Then break the rod off; don't burn it off. You don't want a rounded tip, your pen won't write with a rounded tip...Cosmo, correct me if I'm wrong on that.

You're right, Norma - needs to be snapped off. You may also need to do a touch of fine sanding so that it writes smoothly. You can buy the pre-made cane in soft glass (Lauscha Lady, maybe?) and then pull the points from it but I'm not sure about boro.

You do need to work with the tip of the nib. I flame cut it and then shape it with a fine wetstone. Takes some practice to get it right. You can cut it off instead of flame cutting it, but it takes a LOT longer to shape it up and get it writing.

This site isn't working, now. Although the question has been answered already, could someone please link to a picture of what you guys are talking about? I can't quite picture it in my head.

How cool would it be to make boro jar/inkwells to match the pen? I know what I'm doing when I get back from my son's wedding. lol

I do those. I'm a long time fountain pen collector and the fountain pen world loves anything handmade. There are certain things that they prefer in ink bottles to make them easier to use. Specifically a way to get the last bit of ink out of the bottle. There are several ways to do that. Look up some old Sheaffer Skrip bottles, Iroshizuku bottles, Montblanc bottles, or Akkerman bottles. Four different solutions to the same problem.
