Do you have ventilation?

If not then a mask won't do much. The toxins will still be in the air around you.

Check around on the safety sections for great help with exhausting. Take it from me, when I first started I was excited to jump in and melt shtuff and probably almost killed myself because I had a crappy ventilation setup. After 2 hours I almost passed out on my torch. I managed to get out of my work area and lay on my couch but was having a very hard time breathing for hours afterwards. Make it a priority.

Contact the 3M applications dept through their website and describe what you are doing and they will suggest a mask and filter. I suspect it will be a P100 product but they know best.

Here's my first attempt at fuming.

Not very much fume yet. I promise to do better in the future.

Default No more studio!

Just got the bad news today. The studio space I have been using for the last three years is no more. I rented half my neighbors garage. The insurance inspector came to write a new policy and said that the studio is a fire hazard and the house will not be covered if there is a kiln and propane in the garage. I was hoping that I could torch while my knee was on the mend (Torn tendon). Looks like it might be a while before I can find another place to play. As glass addicts yourselves, I know you know how disappointed I am.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's work. I hope to post mine sometime in the future.

Please don't give up looking for another space to work /play. There must be somewhere for you.

I hate insurance companies. How is it better to have a hot car and a gas grill stored in your garage? Lots do that ... the kiln is insulated and if on a GFI circuit is probably safer than a hot mower or hot car. A compromise might be to move the propane tank outside and run the hose through a window or wall. Just a thought.

Sorry for the rant ... I worked in insurance my first three years out of school. Great concept that like so many has gone corrupt.

The propane canister I can understand but the kiln? I can touch my kiln when its running. Perhaps some research is in order here. Did the inspector list any specifics in regards to the kiln like placement or outlet etc?

I think that because the equipment was not my neighbors, the inspector was adamant that she remove the stuff. He has my neighbor pretty spooked, and I didn't want to ruffle any feathers. My neighbor has been nothing but great about the studio, I'll just have to find something else.

On a lighter note, I have been OKed to start rehab on my knee! Finally I can start doing something proactive, and not just sit around all the time. It sure would have been nice to have a studio in the meantime. Oh well…

Have a good one everybody!
