Default "Medical Grade Pyrex"???????

I hope Brent or Heidi or someone well-versed in boro can set me straight on this, if I need it. I had a goofy debate with a friend today about boro toys. She was singing the praises of a site (Phallix) that sells boro toys and proclaims that they're 'medical grade borosilicate(Pyrex)' on their website. Uhhhhh just how is that different from regular boro???? IS it any different? That just sounded silly to me. Or a way to reassure nervous buyers.

The only thing that I could think of for medical grade classification is the purity level. If a substance can be leached from the glass, it can cause interferences with the liquid, but that is more of an issue when flint (cheap soft) glass is used. Simax and Kimax are the two types of boro that are used for medical glass.

I am interested to see the justification behind the claim.

pyrex, duran, simax and kimax (clear) are all what's called "labgrade" or i guess medical grade. Chinese boro I'm not sure about and would shy off from calling that, although it probably is, too. any coloured boro may not be termed lab or medical grade, as the metal oxydes will leach and contaminate the substances contained in a vessel made with it.
Here's my anecdote as to why they specify "medical grade":
In Australia it's illegal to feed or inject chickens which are grown for consumption with hormones ... this is common knowledge, however there is one company who, as part of their marketing, puts "hormone free" on their packaging! ... I think in the same way, companies might just point out the fact that clear boro is, for the most part anyway, lab or medical grade - just good old-fashioned marketing.
And, anyway ... urmmm ... why were you checking out toys?

It's just another way to entice people to buy it It's a keyword. When I make toys I'll say it's medical grade too.

Ummm... buy from artists - stay away from Phallix. I want to get out of the toy biz but there are reputable artists here on LE and on thegldg.org
