Default melting glass bottles?

I just happened to come across some info on the internet about using glass bottles, like a Bombay Safire gin bottle or vodka bottle, for glass. I currently have a really large supply of soft glass and a few rods of boro - so Im not in need of supplies or anything. But can these glass bottles really be melted and used, to say, make beads?
And if yes, how would you know the CEO of them? Any info would be appreciated. Im just really curious and cant seem to find much info on it.

Yes, they can. It is generally recommended that you use it by itself in a bead. The COE can be inconsistent even from bottle to bottle of the same brand.

Default COE

COE – 82 – and it matters not at all. If I try to melt a clear wine bottle with a brown wine bottle, it won’t work. Even though both bottles are nominally 82 COE, the brown glass has a higher viscosity, which means the glasses have a different degree of liquidity at the same temperature.

You can use it to make beads by using single colors only.

Bottle Glass is tempered to make it harder to break, so some caution
might be advised.

Other types of common glasses may range from 82 up to 88 COE

love to do these! and they sell really well at my craft shows as well.

Someone here had posted a link to you tube showing an old fella cutting the center of the bottle into strips. That works so much easier than random smashed shards for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oALejLHC57o

here are some i've made:

Trish your beads are beautiful! I love the textures and shapes. On the top picture you posted, it looks like there are two different "greens". What is the green bead on the far right made from? It looks pretty unique

Bottle glass can be all sorts of fun--it's ideal for making hollow beads, and some of the colors are remarkably beautiful. Pinnacle Vodka is one of my favorite blues, being a gorgeous light cobalt and easy to work, too. Best of all, it's cheap. The slosh inside the bottle might be pricey, but the bottle itself is worth about 15 cents and nobody will mind if you take their empties.

the really dark green one? it is a champagne bottle from my nephew's wedding. The glass was much thicker than most of the wine bottles I've used... i will have to check when i get home and see what brand it was.

I don't particularly care for wine. I haven't bought a single bottle... all of my friends have been happy to drink for my art and donate their bottles!

One of the very first glasses I worked with, other than the usual 104, was the beautiful blue Arizona iced tea bottles. I cut off the bottom and the neck and then cut strips. That was such a pretty blue!

Talk with bars, restaurants, hotels, and bottle return.
Cut bottles with intresting labels and designs sell fairly well around $10.
Sanding down the cut edge is nessacarly but fairly quick if you have a clean cut.
Much faster with a flat lap, but not nessacarly.

Yeah I actually used to work at this bar in town, my friend is a bartender and I know I could get some empties from them. I'm really interested in Bombay Safire snd pennacle vodka bottles because the blues are really pretty. Appreciate all of the info. You guys here are all wonderful!
