Default New Cricket problems?

My old darling CC sort of got sick and needs to go to the hospital so I hooked up the Cricket I have had and it is so different. I am getting used to it, but I have noticed at the base of the torch just where the flames come out there seems to be a "sparky" looking flame buildup type thing (carbon??) and I have to take my tool and periodically very carefully "swipe" these little bits of flame or whatever they are away and the candles seem to be a wee bit irregular at times.
Is this normal?? Please anyone help!?? It is a brand new torch. I have a 8lpm oxycon. Thank you!
Oh, and can I send my CC back to Carlisle and get it "refurbished" I love that torch!

Sounds like it just needs a cleaning with the cleaning wire that comes with it.

Thank you! I did do that. Do they have a "breaking in" period. That is what my son said. HE said it was just burning off "stuff". My CC never did this. I miss my CC...

I'd contact the manufacturer to be sure.

I have the same torch, and in the first few months, there was indeed quite a bit of carbon buildup. The seller had warned me of this, that these torches are known for it. I flick it off (not that carefully actually, just scraping along the holes with pliers while the torch is on). I also tap on the end of the torch with a metal tool while it is burning, and you can see small sparks flying off. And when it got too bad, I would clean it with the cleaning wire.
It became less and less over time.

I now have a second one, and it does the same thing. I'm pretty sure it will wear off.

thank you!! I can relax a little bit now. I like it, kinda. But I sure miss my Mini CC and I am thinking already that this cricket won't be for me. I bought it months ago, tried to sell it, then my CC sort of died, and I am glad I have the cricket now. Getting used to it. IT does melt glass! I just miss the bushy flame, and the ports seem to be closer together or something on the cricket. Thank you so much! I have heard that if you run a "short" flame it gets this carbon build up more, so I turned my flame up higher, and not so much but it's still there.

Back off a bit on the propane - that might help. My Bobcat gets a small spark or two if I am working for a while. I just flick it off, and then make sure I clean the ports with the wire when I am done. I clean mine every time I torch.

I've had a cricket for years, I love it. it occasionally has a little build up, I clean it off with a tool and go right back to what I was in the middle of sculpting.

Thanks guys! It is just mildly annoying. I suppose I will get used to it. I am relieved that it isn't a major problem.

It helps if you don't work too close to the torch head too.

I have a small brass brush to clean mine after doing heavy reducing. I very seldom have to use the wire.

Have been using the Scorpion for a number of years which has the Cricket as the center fire. Have zero carbon build up. The answer, in my case, is natural gas as the fuel of choice.

For the largest flame, my notes say 5.5 L/min oxygen and 1/4 to 5 psi propane for the Cricket

Nice chart. I was checking it to see if the Nortel ones were on there, and was looking at the torch names. I love some of the torch names.
