Default Beads from Celtic Tombs

Hi all,

I'm back in the country after visiting my parents in Salzburg, Austria. My sis and I went to the local Celtic museum where a lot of stuff from local celtic tombs is displayed. Imagine my surprise when I saw the beads they found attached to bronze jewelry in these tombs. Looks like both men and women were wearing them. I'm posting a few pictures below. Unfortunately I was using a sony handicam to make still pictures and they ended up sucking but I think its clear enough to see how little patterns and styles have changed for the past few thousand years.

There is nothing truly new under the sun. Cool beads, though.

Thanks so much for posting these! It looks like both stacked dots and murrine bullseye circles, right? It seems as if the wonky bullseyes are murrine...?

Lol, not sure what time period but let me email them and ask. That's actually a pretty good question. Maybe I can send my sis there again.

You may be interested in seeing this site: http://www.darkcompany.ca/beads/index.php

This is actually how I got into lampworking in the first place - and the vast majority of my beads are historic replicas. I do viking-age recreation (in the Society for Creative Anachronism) and wear at least two strands of beads hanging between my dress straps when I'm in costume.

That's exactly how I got into lampworking too, but soon found I didn't appreciate authentic replicas as much as I did modern styles. Being on the island of Kauai we have a tiny (6 person) group here, the Canton of Peridot Isle so we don't get to do many activities even though there are two lampworkers in the group. We just don't get to see each other very frequently. It's nice to see another SCAdian on LE.

Fascinating pictures, thanks for sharing. There were Celts in that area around 600BC to 100AD but I would love to hear what they dated them to.

Hi all,

I heard back from the Archaeologist in the museum. She says the blue bead with the yellow nobbs is about 380 BC, the collar with the yellow and orange beads with the melt-ins is about 400 BC, and the top picture is about 500 BC.

I am very excited to see these pictures and to know the Archeologist was so helpful!

Since this seems to be turning into a SCAdian roll call, let me just say, "Here!"
