A patchy one. Accidentally burned off foil while adding the Ekho.. But I like the little silver bubbles on the black, too. And I made black ends, because I mucked up the ends, but I like how you can see down the ends for more of what's going on inside

Looks great, Di! I only heat up the Ekho when I apply and then encase quickly...takes some practice but you'll get it down.

This tutorial is timeless and undoubtedly helped a lot of lampworkers out there.

BellaDonna Honey Glaze works pretty well as a substitute for Ekho. Same steps, only I like to reduce the Honey Glaze lightly before encasing. I'll grab a pic of one when I get home.

Finally, some pics of the Opal bead with the Honey Glaze!

I'm still working on the technique, so please excuse how different the 2 sides are!

Alli - Looks wonderful!!!!! Just like an opal! On the "back side", it appears the silver burned off more than the front. I do that, too. When that happens, I just squish the bead so that there is some silver on each side vs. just one side.

It's weird Amber; I didn't do that on purpose. I could have sworn, when I squished the bead after encasing it, there was an equal amt of silver on both sides. And I tried one this morning where I burnt off all the silver on purpose, attempting to replicate the blues. It has a different look, as the silver comes back up when I reduce the Honey Glaze and there is more of an iridescence overall. It's in the kiln now; I'll post it later.

Just a new tip, if you make the core using clear, you get these.

Wow, i can't wait to try some of these, ekho hates me when i try to do anything else with it so i am hoping i can get it to work for me on these fire opal beads!
Thanks for sharing Amber, I do have one question though, is the silver glass melted into the base bead before encasing or left raised?

It's left slightly raised. The key with Ekho is to wait until the tip of the glass goes completely clear before you make your swipe, then remove from the flame before you encase. Ekho will turn a beigy color if it stays in the flame too long.

Wonder how it would look with a reactive transparent in the middle, like straw yellow, or transp brown....

Course, I can't find out myself as I'm out of Honey Glaze, have no Ekho, and no $$ for ordering till the end of the month LOL

I've thought of just layering different transparents over the silver to get different effects, too.

Default I am in happy land.

Being rather new and using a hot head I had dismissed all reaction glass until I saw this post by Amber. I finally got a chance to try it this past weekend and I am so happy with them. I am not getting the blues you guys are getting, but they are beutimous anyway.

I will try and post some photos today or tomorrow. Maybe you can see what I may be doing wrong or right. LOL I am happy with them though.

Thank you Amber; I would not have tried the DH glass if not for you.

Cherri

Cherri, Wonderful! I don't get blues all the time either. They just tend to show up every once in a while. I think if you flash the Ekho stripes in the reduction part of the flame just before you encase, the blues show up more.

Default My first attempt at Opals!

These are some of my first. I love them.
The heart has Lauscha White encased with black/purple and I used that as the base and then ss and then the ekho and encased with Lauscha soft clear.

I used lauscha soft clear on all the encasing. The rest have a Hades base.

Don't be to harsh..
Photo hog tonight. One two more of fronts and backs to post.

Default Second set.

These are the second set with front and back showing.

All of these were with the hades black, silver leaf, (I made a mistake and said ss on the other post) the ekho and encased with lauscha soft clear.

I hope you like them. My first attempt with DH EVER!.. I am so happy with them. I can't wait to try some more.

If I can do this anyone can.!

Thank you, Thank you Amber
