Default pickling boro clear?

i got a shipment last night of 24mm marble stock and some 5 and 8 mm rods...all Simax.
well the vendor just shrink wrapped everything together loosely, so the rods all rubbed and scratched during shipping. so now what was supposed to be gorgeous pristine clear rod is scratched to shit.

can i pickle boro? is this par for the course for most vendors (i won't say who, because they are a great vendor save for this one issue) or do some vendors actually take the time to ensure it's not going to get all scuffed up?

Packing it up loose so that it can get all scratched up is a major bummer - it's also proof that alot of people JUST DON'T THINK!!!

On the other hand, I buy 3/4" clear rod (Simax) in a carton, with cardboard separators between each piece. There are ALWAYS scratches on each piece - not enough to ruin anything, but the worst ones I remove (by heating the scratch real hot and 'wiping it off'
with a 5mm rod of clear).

If it were me I would complain BIG TIME to the supplier. The loss of glass alone, not to mention time is major when you consider it. If they are as bad as you say then you are probably 'wiping' away at least 2 marbles worth of glass and 15 or 20 minutes time per rod. Not to mention the hassel factor.

Odd...I just got a bunch of clear yesterday, shrink wrapped and scratched all to hell.
Some broken pieces, too.

This time it was 104. But still...come on, man!

Sounds like they need to train their shipping/wrapping people.

Had similar issues in the past with Frantz. They also shipped me glass packaged so poorly that it cut my finger to the bone when I was trying to unpack it. Sad. I try to buy full cases for this reason. Quality is much better when it makes it to me factory packed.

partly was my own fault...i should have just gotten a case. once it's pickled for an hour in 100f solution it's acceptable.
plus i have long plastic tubes that i rec'd carbon fiber in....water tite perfect for pickling full length rods!!!
i leave them in the sun in the tube/solution and the sun heats it just enough.

Pickling is soaking glass rods in a weak acid solution to clean the surface.

i just dissolved table salt into white vinegar until no more would go into solution, and use that as a pickling brine. works great.

Default DUH!

Full marks for lateral thinking. Put long rods in a TALL container for pickling, not a WIDE one. Free sunshine. YAYAY!

i didn't want to have to fill up a huge cassarole pan, my next idea was pvc pipe.
