for those who have liked the boro newbie tutorial thread thought there might be something in here you could use also. This has good info offered by the experts as we worked through the tutorials. And a lot of lessons learn through trial and error.

Odd to look back at some of my pictures LOL

Kare I have a question What kind of clear did you use in that air trap implosion? My A/P's always haze to the point where you can't see the color...Is it the clear? Or ... ?

It's the Amber/Purple that does it. The haze develops whenever it's heated. You need to hit it with flame to burn it off, which you obviously can't do when it's encased.

Try using Purple Luster or Red Exotic as your implosion color. That will give you some nice purples.

But, I have found that Simax reacts the least with heavily saturated glasses...

I'm glad Cosmo could help. Because at that point I was buying what was on sale from who had low shipping since I lived in the middle of no where and was just learning and didn't know any better.

I don't know about the other newbies here- I have a lot of colors I got when I first started a couple of years ago and didn't know what to do them---and have never touched again.

So I'm going to take a different color catagory each week, and play to see what happens. I can use black, white and clear.

Sooo... I'm starting with Reds. Here is what I started with tonight...

TAG Reef Red, GA Candy Apple Red, NS Red Exotic, GA Black Ruby, NS DAP(cheated), MB Scarlett Pink, MB American Beauty and NS Garnet Dark.

Anybody else want to play?

Hi Kare,
I'd love to see what you come up with! I probably have a few I haven't tried yet that I could add to the mix.

hmm I just got some boro to play with. Haven't had time to do a huge amount with it, a lot of it is unlabeled shorts so I am just kind of trying to figure out what does what. Here are a couple of beads I have made so far.

I am looking forward to exploring this glass further and learning to do some off mandrel work.

Elisa- glad to have company. The more people we have the more we will learn I think.

Sonja- great start with the beads. I find off mandrel work easier than beads with boro.

I should probably mention I started with reds because they seem to give me the most trouble. I think I over heat them or just don't strike them correctly.
Well the results are out of the kiln for Red-day 1---Ack! Now I remember why I stay away from most reds. I'm thinking too much heat in some cases, and just not realizing how dark colors would get in others.

Starting with the lighter leaf;
DAP over Reef Red
Red Exotic with some clear dots (yuk)
American Beauty with Some Frit (Usually pretty...think I used too much heat)
Black Ruby with with frit- actully not bad in person, the frit has a good sheen
Garnet Dark, over white with some Scarlett Pink dots
Twist with Red Exotic, black, white and reef red
Leaf of red exotic, not bad in person, has some copper sheen

Any suggestions on working any of the colors? I'll play some more today and try to delute some of the colors and see if I missed any reds in my stash.

Love the colors you got on the DAP leaf...love the American Beauty bead, too! American Beauty is one of the colors I have not worked with and want to try out.

I have started using red exotic recently and really love it simply mixed with clear and wound on for a bead.

I used to use Black Ruby a lot to make dragons. (at least I think that was the color, I'll double check...). I really like it b/c it starts out a nice color but then strikes more and more as you work it until it becomes a really deep and somewhat translucent red. Similair to the red exotic when mixed with clear.

I'll pick some to try tomorrow and post my results

Thanks, I actully over cooked the american beauty. The pictures below are both Am Beauty, layered over a crayon red for the dress. It is usually a very pretty red. It ended up too windy for me to torch. When it blows from the wrong side it back drafts my vent system.

That is a cute red dress. I have been working with some reds lately. Christmas stuff. I found that garnet is the nicest, in that is stays transparent easily. It doesn't fog out if you treat it poorly.

That red dress is way cute, beautiful color! I need to try it....

Today, I played with 3 I haven't used before: NS Poppy (a WYSIWYG, so not much to it besides trying to keep it from boiling), Lokis Lipstick and NS Silver aqua. Here are the rods....

Bead pics tomorrow!

I love Lokis Lipstick- great over white or pink. Can't wait to see what comes out of the kiln for you.

So here's what I got...
Quite a strange combination of colors, not quite sure why I picked them!

LOVED the Silver Aqua, like the poppy color a lot, but definitely had to encase to keep it from boiling. The Loki's Lipstick seems a lot like DAP to me, not seeing a lot of difference. Thx for the tip on layering it over white, I did try a bird w/ that combo today...

You did good!.. Lokis is a lot like DAP but I tend to get a slightly different color range.
This is DAP and Lokis,

If I'm not mistaken Loki's Lipstick is an amber purple mixed with a striking red. It's a really neat color and emphasizes the more red/pink end of the amber purple spectrum.
