Help! They Stink
i have some beautiful butterscotch colored bone beads that reek. i have them triple bagged and i can still smell them. there is no way i can use them like this and unless someone knows of a remedy to neutralize this odor, i will have to throw them out. have any of you discovered a way to get rid of such a strong odor or had the same experience? ....kath

eeew never had that problem try some baking soda and water maybe? To nuetralize anything growing in them or maybe a soak in bleach? I would toss them personally unless you knew it was just something that got spilled on them.

i think it might be a solution that they were treated in that is smelling. it couldn't hurt to soak them in something but bleach would take away the coloring which i like. i will have to look at different products. maybe the stuff you use to neutralize male cat spray would work....kath

I would try leaving them outside, exposed, for a few days. Sometimes the gunky smells will degas. If it works, it's a simple, non-toxic solution.

I did a search for stinky bone beads and found:

There are a few suggestions there you might be interested in trying.

That's why I never use bone beads in any of my designs.
The smell alone from them makes me wince.

I had some that I baked on parchment paper and then soaked in a baking soda solution. The baking released the residue on the bone and the baking soda cleaned up the scent. I finished them off by washing with soap and water.
Good luck!

so far, soaking them for 24 hours in "Nature's Miracle" for removing cat and dog vomit, feces, urine and blood has not worked. at the moment i am following the advice of the link given in this thread to put them in a sealed container with wadded up newspapers. i am supposed to do this for a few days, changing out the old newspapers for fresh ones periodically. next, i will try the baking on parchment then soaking in baking soda suggestion....thanks for all your tips, kath

Try letting them sit in a coffee container with dry ground coffee. Ground coffee is great at taking smell out of stuff. I bought a trailer that had an old smelly fridge and I left a coffee container full of coffee in it for about two weeks. I changed the coffee every couple of days and it took the smell right out. I've also sprinked it on wood floors that had a cat peeing on them for the winter and no one noticed. I sprinkled the coffee on it, let it sit and would sweep it up and add more every couple of days. Worked great.

Baking soda is great for absorbing odors, too.

If none of that works you can try a more agressive approach with skunk smell removal solution. It is a home made solution that involves hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dawn dishwashing liquid.
Is this natural bone? Don't use vinegar.
Bacteria causes smell, so an antibacterial should remove it. Another thing that causes smell is the chemical reactions in the smell agent with the atmosphere (skunk smells work like that).
