Default boro silver effect

I am trying to come up with a silver metallic effect, but so far everything is turning gold under clear. I tried silver foil as well as palladium. I've attached a copy of the picture - it's for an exchange, and I need to make a bead that is my interpretation of this pic. Any suggestions on how to achieve a silver metallic look in boro would be terrific!

I would like to know the answer too. You can get a gorgeous metallic effect with blue moon on the surface but it's not completely silver -- more blue silver.

Does the bead have to be encased in clear?

What about Disco Sparkle from GA? You can use it on the surface, thin it with clear or other transparents by mixing, and encase it.

Blue Caramel from Northstar is the most silver colored that I've used-but not perfect.

I have used Butterscotch powder sprinkled on (at the last minute) to create a look, that when reduced, look like sterling silver. ;-D

I think you're supposed to be able to reduce momka's magic mirror and get the colors to come to the surface too, but it's been a while since I tried.

eta: my bad, I went looking and it says to oxidize it.

Wow, I haven't been getting any email updates from this thread - so sorry!!!

I hadn't thought of Disco Sparkle! Shocky but it would definitely work!

No, doesn't have to be encased. I swear when I used Palladium before, it was different with lots of color but now it balls up just like silver foil and pops off. Maybe I'm using too much heat?

I'll try the other colors too - thank you so much for all of the ideas You guys are the best!

Paladium works different with boro than it does with softglass, but I have never had it ball up unless you lit the surface with an aggressive flame. Try burnishing it on, and then just lightly hit it with the flame.

I bet you're right, Eric. I have a bad habit of being impatient and cranking the heat. I did keep the bead under the flame after burnishing for encasement, but I'm guessing the flame was still too hot. If left unencased, will it eventually rub off?

Seems to me you could get the effect in the top picture the best with dichro?

Now why didn't I think of that? I'm pretty much a dichro virgin as far as boro goes. I'm not even sure where to buy some - any suggestions?

I bought some CBS, 7 mm rod, strips and scrap. Do you have any pics of the cane you made? I bet it's awesome.

Try encasing a piece of raw silicon. You know, the kind they make wafers out of for computer chips. I have seen it encased in boro, and it looks like a mirror. you can break it with a hammer and encase the bits too, they look cool.

I'll def post some pics, if you promise not to laugh...

One of the things I ordered was some dichro scrap. I couldn't believe there were pieces with pictures on them. Score! I'll have to try some pendants with those. I figured I'd just get some scraps from regular sheets - nice surprise!

Well I don't have anything fabulous to show, but here are the three beads I'm sending for the exchange pic:

I tried the CBS again (specs of silver in top two beads) but wasn't able to get the effect I was hoping for. Would have been cool if it would stay as a sheet to give a solid silvery effect. The dichro rod I ordered was blue, not clear - my bad. Haven't tried the dichro scrap yet.

Might not be exactly what you were shooting for but very nice anyway Dichro is not easy to work with.
