Need help with ventilation
If a room is 184 sq feet - aprox 14X15 with 7 or 8 foot tall ceilings what specs would be needed for ventilation? I'm an artist I don't get along well with numbers. I see the formulas and it looks like a foreign language!

Hi, it is not the room size but the opening of your work space as for a Barley Box hood. This link will take you to a forum just filled with info for you. Also you need to have replacement air for the air you exhaust out. It should ideally come over your shoulders from behind and up under your workbench. Some people just open a window or a door.

The room size has no bearing on the specs for your ventilation system.
The ventilation system is based on the movement of air from around you and your torch and is based on the size of the opening of your hood or other capture device. The traditional formula is square footage of opening times a factor. The factor is usually considered to be from 100 to 125. Example - hood is 3 ft wide and 2 ft deep (front to back) so ... 3 x 2 x 100 = 600 CFM or 3 x 2 x 125 = 750 CFM. The CFM is the rating for whatever fan you decide to use. The factor can be adjusted by various design factors such as having side curtins such as in a bailey box. The height of the capture device above the torch is mostly a convenience issue; too close and you are cramped and too high reduces the effectiveness; most people stay around 18" - 24" above the torch. Secondary to this is makeup air. Ideally it should come from behind you and must be at least as much air as is removed by the vent system fan. The makeup air should also come into the space at least 10 ft from where the system vents outside; 10 ft of seperation.
Hope this clears thing up a bit.
ETA - Ducting has a great effect on the system. It is true that you can move the same amount of air through almost any size duct BUT as you move more air thru a smaller duct the velocity and noise goes up. The site posted above has lots of info on finding the best duct size. Do not be intimidated by the math; for the most part it is simple multiply and divide and addition, grade school stuff. Have a happy journey to your vent system destination.

Though this calculator is not complete (still in development stages), it will help you with the numbers.....
