Default What can firebrick be used for besides kilns?

Is there any practical application of firebrick in lampworking other than it being used in kilns?

If I were to get, say, 20 bricks, would there be anything I could do with it, or are they basically useless?

It depends on the type of firebrick.

I have two - one is quite porous and light, like pumice, which is the size of a standard house brick. I don't use it for lampworking, however I use it for retaining heat while soldering jewellery.

The other firebrick I have is half the height of a normal house brick, very dense and probably the same weight as a house brick. I use a few of them around my torching station as I'm always looking for somewhere else to put hot tools, hot glass, hot marvers, etc., etc. I am a messy worker

As for 20, if I had that many I'd probably put them over my existing worksurface (as it's not fire or heatproof) and enjoy all that extra work room! There is a mortar mix for firebricks, but I don't know it. We had a pizza oven installed, that's how I have extra firebricks and know about the mortar!

Marianne.

Fire bricks works well if you are annealing metals for annealing and soldering.

They also make excellent book ends when not being applied to other purposes!
