Default I just can't figure out how to anneal these

I've read the info on Northstar, but keep confusing myself.

I made about 18-20 icicles, none more than 1/2 inch thick at any point. They range from 4-7 inches at an estimate.
I made them & let them cool on a graphite marver as I made more.

To batch anneal them, would anyone mind helping me figure out a schedule?

Ramp AFAP to 1050,
Hold 2 hours,
ramp down at ???
to ???
hold 1 hour,
ramp down at ????
to ????
hold 1/2 hour

I'm lost.

And they say there are no icicles in Florida!
Actually, I looked up icicle images last night, and mine are a little more ... bumpy ... than real ones, but they catch the light nicely!

You don't want to go full ramp because you risk causing more stress. My schedule, non-striking colors:

Ramp 900 to 960, hold for 30, ramp 900 to 1050, hold for 30, ramp 120 to 900, hold for 30, ramp 120 to 400, shut off (Fiber kiln. If you have a brick kiln, you can ramp to 800 & shut off.)

Thank you Shawnette. I had been told boro could take the fast ramp, but I'll take your advice and slow it down. But I don't need the 1/2 hour per 1/4" ? (actually only one is close to 1/2", most are closer to 1/4-3/8ths anyway I think)

unless you have a super fast oven just run to annealing temp.
i am going off memory. hold temp at annealing temp 30 minutes
for every 1/4 thickness of the glass. example 1/4 30 minutes
1/2 1 hour and so on.

i have had my new book with me every day except today..... Drew Fritts marble book has a good Boro schedule in it and I believe you hold at temp for 2 hours and take down at 1 hour increments for x amount of temp / toime and then its like 1 minute per degree to like 400 then turn off the kiln and cool natural. but I only read this once and could be way off since i dont have a kiln yet.
hope this helps

When I make icicles, they end up under my torch on a graphite pad until I can get the loops on them ( I can hold them by hand so they are room temp.). Then I just pop them into the kiln, garages at 1020. Most of mine are between the first grader pencil size and a regular #2 yellow pencil. From there I anneal normally, ramp to 1050 for 45 minutes then down to 910 (590/hr) for 30 minutes then down to 600 (438/hr) and power off. When I get home I'll update my post.

I watched the video tutorial from HyperT, and made the 1st two with the medium fat rod I had, but then switched to 3 or possibly 4 mm because I have a lot of that, so most are not all that fat.
The thing that confuses me on the Northstar site is to bring them down then hold, then bring them down & hold, etc, etc. but I can't figure out how fast they want me to bring it down. I also got to thinking that if I heated it up, then brought it down to soft glass temps for a hold, I could make a few things and put them in the kiln & do the soft glass schedule if that worked, to get a few soft glass pieces made & annealed too.

I guess I'll just go for it & see if it works. I dropped one on the floor while I was making the loop, and it sounded kind of pretty as it broke! It only made three pieces though, so I welded them back together & finished it. Being as it was lumpy to begin with, it didn't look too bad!

Generally if you have a hot kiln, ramping down a hundred degrees at max is not a big deal.

Thank you, I appreciate everyone sharing their knowledge.
I'll use 100° to come down from the top temps, hopefully tomorrow.

I read everything and kind of tried the middle road, thanks everyone. For better or worse they are cooking now. It's just glass, right?

I used to rely on annealing schedules in different lampwork books. I had some breakage with a few pieces during shipping. I inspected a few pieces under a polariscope and they still had stress. Since then I have changed my schedule to a more conservative one. If you have the opportunity to check a piece that will help, must be non opaque glass to use a polariscope though.
I would:
ramp 500 per hour to 1050, hold 1.5 hours (I do 3 hour hold per inch).
ramp 40 degrees per hour to 900 (50 below strain to allow for off temp kiln).
if brick kiln turn it off.
If a fiber kiln, I would ramp 200 to 500 and then shut kiln off.
I do not open the kiln until it reaches room temp.

I was able to purchase an inexpensive polariscope flashlight years ago. I cant seem to find a link to one now.

Thank you Ro,
I have seen instructions on making your own somewhere, I'll see if I can find it.
These clear icicles should be easy to see I would think once I do.
But at least I did it, and the 1st time is always the scary one for me no matter what I'm doing.

I made my icicles with 10, 12 mm and 14 mm rods. Used Shawnetts schedule, and it worked great.
I put mine in a fiber blanket and then batch anneal.

I need to get some more larger diameter rod & do some with that. These are kind of slender so may not be very durable.

Thank you, they're based on this video by HyperT (I had skinny boro, so had to adapt a bit)

Thank you ChrisAnn, that is so sweet, but I don't want to rob your stock. I appreciate the offer though! I will get a selection on my next order.
I'm going to order some tubing too, to try the tutorial from Bernard.
Oh, but what is triangle rod? Can you give me a little info on what it is used for, so I can tell if I need to order some?

Thank you.
And why do we want that instead of round? Is it better for a specific purpose?

I've been wanting to get some triangle and some square to make into icicles. It should make a different look than two round rods twisted together.

If you like the kind of icicles that Trey makes that is the kind of rod to use. Plus you can stripe a little sparkle color on the fins it looks pretty cool.

I haven't tried two round rods twisted together, and I haven't seen Trey's icicles, so off to do some searching, thanks!

Since we are talking of icicles here, I wanted to share how I packaged mine for gifts. I took a piece of cardbord that fit behind a christmas card, then slippd it along with some with icicles into a shrinkwrapped baggie, and then heat sealed. It made them sturdy enough to slip into a bubble envelope for mailing.
These icicles were about 6" long. I put an icicle into the package with howmany ever there were in the family.
