Default Help! Nikon Coolpix S5100

My son sent me a Nikon Coolpix S5100 from Japan for Christmas. It worked great until the battery was "exhausted" and wouldn't take a charge. I used the plug in charger and also tried to charge via the USB and my computer.
No go. I took it to a camera shop and they said the battery was no good.
Ok, I bought another battery. I've taken pictures and a few movies and today, same thing. Battery is "exhausted" and won't take a charge.
WTH? Is it because it's from Japan? I find that hard to believe but that's the only thing I can come up with.
Before I go buy another Nikon Coolpix, I thought I'd check with you experts.

Ellen, I used a Coolpix for years and never had a problem with the battery. I used the same one for 8 or 9 years.

Sorry that you are having problems with yours, but in general, a Coolpix is a nice camera.

I took the camera to a camera store today. The guy that works/owns actually knew what he was talking about - unlike the "tech" back in MI.
Anyway, he said (at no charge) that the camera will not allow the battery to be charged internally so I need to get an external battery charger.
Good thing I brought my back-up camera to FL with me, eh?
