Default What's the best video and best book for a beginner?

Hi all, I'm fairly new to lampwork, What's the best video out there to help me learn. I'd like something that will show the flame too, for reduction, and then for raku. I can't get either to work for me. I also need to learn stringer control.

Thanks, Kathy

Hey, Anybody ever used the below mandrel steady rest?

doublehelixglassworks.com has some video tutorials showing flames for reducing.

There is a thread here all about raku, and it has some good info. Let me find it...
http://lampworketc.com/forums/showth...highlight=raku

I'm still working on stringer control

My DH made me an adjustable rest, I have not tried the one shown, sorry.

One of the most comprehensive books for learning is Corina Tettinger's Passing the Flame. However, it also isn't the cheapest book. It does however cover a lot of techniques.

I can't really recommend any of the DVDs as I haven't watched too many of them.

If you only bought one book it would be Corina's Passing the Flame - it is so comprehensive it will keep you learning for ages. For a basic beginner's book Cindy Jenkins Making Glass Beads is great.

another vote for Passing the flame. It is not cheap but so easy to understand and lots of informations!
I had the Making glass beads book and I sold it when I got Corina's book.

As for the DVD, I have Corina's stringer control DVD. I like it. But there's a lot of nice tutorials and demo on You Tube.... Maybe you can check there before investing in a DVD.

Are you on a hothead? If so, raku will be challenging, it is a striking glass. It will reduce as well, but isn't very pretty

I agree with this 100%. I started with Cindy Jenkins then purchased Passing the Flame once I had the money saved up. I have other lamp working books now, and I think those are great for beginners.

Videos, no clue. I watch free YouTube videos if something is stumping me. Only video I've seen is Brent Graber's 1st DVD on using boro, which I thought was great. No use to a soft glass user though. I also saw some old videos on VHS, but I can't remember a thing about them.

Yep, Passing the Flame is my vote too. You could post in the Garage Sale part of the forum that you are looking for a used copy to save money.

I agree, Passing The Flame and her stringer control DVD, helped me the most and I still refer back to them.

Thanks everyone, I'll check out Passing the Flame. Carolyn M, I am on a carlisle mini cc and I still can't do raku or reduction, I just don't get what I'm doing wrong, and thank you Eileen, I did see that thread so I tried it that way, super hot, marver, super hot, marver, nope, didn't work. Someday I guess I'll get it, but I don't want to keep wasting the glass & frit.

I would experiment with dots or frit to learn, less glass per bead. Did you go to the post #4?? where it talks about the oxy flame & watching the "clouds"?
Also, what are you getting, dark or tan or ??

Corina's book and Cindy Jenkins Making Glass Beads, were my first books. For the newbie who has never fired up a torch, Kate Fowle Meleney's video is the absolute best. Her torch is a Minor, and mine was a Hothead, but that's okay. I still learned what I needed to know from this video. She has a few of them in her Etsy shop, and this is the beginner video:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/27323394...mpworked-beads

You should also get her intermediate video too.

Edited: oops, I'm sorry! You're not a beginner! I need my coffee....!

Bandhu Scott Dunham's Contemporary Lampworking all three volumes. Not cheap but very informative.

Everything you Ever Wanted to Know About GlassBead Making by James Kervan is also a great book. I found mine used on Amazon from a Goodwill....

Thank you all so much! This is very helpful. Eileen, if you're referring to the copied thread at the top of the page, yes, I went there. I'll look again. I'm working, or trying to, with raku frit, and i tried reduction frit. Very dark, in both instances. This week I have given up on the raku and am working on finding my "Sweet Spot" for stringer. BTW, why do i always want more glass?

Just want to cast another vote for anything by Corina Tettinger.

She is an incredible talent, incredible teacher, and she has a TON
of personality so she is relaxing and fun learn from.

Her Daffodil tutorial is terrific and comes with almost an hour of video.
(not related to Raku or reduction )

I agree. Hey, if it makes you feel any better, I've been making beads for almost 10 years, and I still can't get the blues and purples to come out in raku. silver glass is something I won't even bother with because the results are too different from bead to bead, and I make matching sets.

Basics first, and there is SO much to learn without worrying about taming difficult glass!

Post 405 of that thread.
However, they bring up a good point. The special glass is usually pretty pricey, and can be very frustrating, so the regular glass is way less stressful to learn with and is very pretty too.

Also, if you're on a single fuel torch it doesn't seem to get hot enough or have enough oxygen for many of the striking/silver glasses according to what I've read. You can reduce with it though by covering the oxygen ports.

Hi Kathy,

If you are interested I am presenting a web seminar Thur May 3rd sponsored by Glasscraft/Winship Designs and Firelady. I will cover a lot of what you were asking about. There will be a LIVE chat room where you can ask questions and I will answer them. There is info about this in the sales rack area and also the classes area. Hope this will help.

You said that you are using a mini cc but did not mention what size concentrator you are using. The cc is an oxygen hog. That could be an issue for you. I also have a cc and started with a m5. It was not enough umph for the cc. I bumped up to a 20 and am a happy camper.
