It works w/stainless as well, but a sharper point than that Fireworks rake works better.

My dental tools are surgical steel - those can't stay long in a flame because they're too thin. Tungsten doesn't mind a flame at all.

The stainless steel rake/probe here, after the tungsten stuff, is cheap - $2.50 - and works well for this. And the shaping tool sets under that are better than a dental tool - a bit sturdier, except my dentist gives me his worn ones free.

Mine is similar to the bent tungsten sold here.

I tend to use my tungsten to poke holes in the glass for bails and such.

When it is red hot tungsten doesn't stick to glass.

:O they've changed it! Mine is tungsten, that's how I end up not frying the point. I promise I abuse the dude badly lol! Crap, I really like the little tool. Burnt and banged from 2005. I have a new one not opened, now I'm bummed.

At any rate, any stainless or tungsten will work. Warm glass, 'cold' tool. If it gets stuck after twisting just wait a sec and twist very gently or some say to warm it again, which I've not tried.

I have a small video right now on my website for customers showing how I do the twists. It may help. I have found that if you do it when the bead is too hot you are going to screw up your base shape. Just heat the area you want to twist and you have option of either blowing the stringer and snapping it or melting the stringer out of you want to leave a glob of glass behind.

Thank you Branda for that video ... I never thought of adding the extra dot of clear. Will give that a try. Much appreciated!

Hi again Angie,

If I am doing a swirl where I want one color (A) to swirl up into the other color (B) without just twisting the two together too much, I heat the spot I want to work in, then put the clear stringer up in the color B, but not too far from color A, then twist. That twist brings color A up into color B (or down, whichever) in a more separate arc. I stop when it comes to the point I want it to be. You have to experiment a bit with how close, to see the different looks it gives. Is that what you mean.

I had been putting my stringer in on the line, and it wasn't the look I was trying to get for that particular bead.

Yes, I put the stinger in the middle of the SIS line around the beads and twist and it gets messy. So maybe I need to put it more up in the top color and just the edge of the SIS and twist? I'll try that.

That works better for me. Sometimes not even touching, a bit above, depending on what I'm trying to do. But both colors need to be able to freely move.

If you use stringer to twist/twirl, experiment. It is different to use a thin stringer, than a fatter one. I also many times like to take a thin clear stringer, heat the tip, and make a small mariah (flatten the tip) and use this for the twirl. Works great for a wave look.
