Pawprint?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make a pawprint that doesn't look like a kindergardener tried. LOL When I do the pad - it really looks like three dots together and the toe pads just don't look right. Any suggestions would be awesome! Oh...and pics too. You would think I could figure this out...

Are you doing beads or fusing?
I bought a stamp, and stamped copper sheet, then cut around what was left to put on a bead, but haven't tried to use it yet. I stink at getting copper on beads without a mess sometimes. I was going to use the pieces that were the actual cut out fusing something.

Maybe someone who actually knows how to do it with glass will chime in, LOL

Thanks Eileen. I actually want to do a pawprint raised on a pendant or bead. I have seen the fused cutout kind and they are very cute!

Hi Kat,
I've made them a couple of ways - with dots, and using a paper punch. For making them with dots, put three dots close together and melt them together for the palm part, then add separate dots for each toe. After digging through my stash, I'll post photos of some made with the torn-apart paper punch.

Hi,
Here are some of my paw print beads. I need more practice melting the 3 dots into a good palm. The "paper punch" beads were etched; I used elmer's glue to keep the paw part shiny.

There are other choices out there too for dimensional imprints. Check out sites like this :

I love the paper punch ones but I don't understand how it is done ... can someone enlighten me please.

Hi Angie,
You have to tear the paper punch apart to use it on glass beads. Rip all the plastic off first, then pop the springs off and separate the metal parts. For the imprint, you can then use either the solid part that pushes through the paper, or the outline part. For this design, the outline part worked best. I would show you the actual 'press' used for my beads, but it has decided to hide from me. Once it shows up, I'll post the pic.

Oh my gosh guys. They are adorable Cheri. I love the ones you did yourself. I was talking about kitty/puppy - something that I could do small scale or large scale on a bead or on a pendant. They make great fundraisers and gifts. If I get a chance - I will take some photos this weekend and post mine and see what you all think. I too would like to know more about the imprint one.

Ok, I found my paw punch finally. One side is smoother than the other, and it's easier getting a nice impression; just run your thumb across the cut-outs, and you'll feel the difference. These photos show the tear down progression.

Use a press to shape the bead, then reheat one side and push the punch into it. The bead flattens when doing this, so try to offset that by putting the bead back into the bead press bottom first. I usually hold the press with my hand, although you could use tweezers or pliers to hold it. It does get hot, so I only make one bead before letting it sit for a while to cool off.

It's hard for me to get that nice impression and still keep the bead decently shaped. See photo of this bead's side -- not so great. Trying to keep a crisp paw and flame smooth the sides isn't easy. I know -- PPP!

Hope this helps anyone interested. Thanks for your compliments, too. I'd also love to see others' paw beads.

ps For the prints created by dots -- use your marver to flatten the dots -- don't melt them in completely flat.

Mine have a wooden handle that I glued on. I also cut and ground all the "extra" stuff away. A bit of work, but I'm kinda anal about some things.

Those are great upgrades! I've wanted to cut away the excess, but wasn't sure what tools I had to buy next to do that. Would just a dremel tool work?

You guys are awesome! I would have never thought of tearing one apart and using it in that context. I have used it with the copper and added the copper cutouts to the beads...and let me just say - patience, practice and persistence or it will end up being flung across the room. LOL

They are just great! Does anyone else have any suggestions on the dot type pawprints on how to get the pads a little more oblong - more like a paw? I am going to post my photos this week so you can see what I mean.

Yes. The metal is really soft. I used large wire cutters because I couldn't find my dremel cutting discs, then ground the edges on my bench grinder.

Shawnette - what kind of glue did you use - that would withstand the heat?
I have taken mine apart, and see that the part with the "holes" is actually two parts connected by a small bit of metal - did you saw them apart?

Yes, I cut them apart and used the larger part. Epoxy will take the heat.

I do paws with a dot of ivory, flatten then a dot of rootbeer, and flatten, usually on a black base. You can do any colors though. I do other color combos. Bright n funky and kindda normal variations. Funny I made a bunch of paws this week...
