Default New studio up and running, let the classes begin!

We have finally put the finishing touches on the new studio and we are now concentrating on guest teachers. So far we have had Sara Sally LaGrand over to play(wonderful lady), plus Marshal and Caitlin hyde and the UK's very own Di east. This years line up so far is Jan Rigden Clay(marble maker from Tazmania), the lovely Bronwen Heilman, Claudia Trimbur-Pagel(I booked her twice cuz I love her A LOT!!!) and silver smith Angela Kennedy.

Ummm... Is your ventilation solely dependent on open windows?

I noticed the same thing. Doesn't appear to be any mechanical ventilation. Nine or ten torches put out a lot of contaminants.

Yep, no capture area for each torch, no visible exhaust removable system, replacement air?

Looks great and spacious.

LOL we had a ventilation specialist instal vent and hidden hoods into the loft area. I didn't want to ruin the look of a 400 year old building with hoods and ducting so we build it in the false room area
If you look closely at the picture at the bottom you can see the covers that hide my secret

Although I did notice you were all quick to condemn me

Im sorry? I joined this forum as I was told that you were all a very nice bunch of people. Obviously I was wrong. All I have done is post pictures of something I'm proud of. If there is a problem with my hoods and vents then you could just have stated what it was and I would have done something about it.
I'm sorry that this is how you treat people over the pond.
Not a nice experience
Goodbye

I have to say I have been to Tuffnell glass on many occasions and have done a class there with all the torches being used and the doors shut! I did not notice that the ventilation wasn't doing it's job and having a very small studio space myself I am very aware of the dangers and the contaminants that go with it. If there was a health and safety risk it would of been pointed out by the many people that have used the studio.

I haven't been on here for a long time and on the front page it says 'a friendly place to be' I guess that was wrong!

I've been to the studio several times and can assure everyone that the ventilation is more than adequate. I've no concerns about it at all, and I do get bad headaches if a room isn't ventilated.

I'm not sure why there is a need for such aggression here. I always thought LE was a friendly and helpful place, but then maybe I don't see the contentious threads. :-/

I would say that the facilities Tuffnell Glass offer are state of the art which no doubt explains why they are so popular...not withstanding their positive can do attitude & their incredible support for the lampwork community & chartiable causes.....what a contrast to their critic....

I don't feel laserglass represents the people here on LE, and your giving this person way too much attention.

Let's get back to the original intention of this thread.....beautiful studio and congrats on your class schedule. I heard Sara Sally had a wonderful time teaching here recently.
Love your pics!

WOW....i do not frequent LE much anymore...i am told that i am gruff, for this i am sorry. but the ventilation in this room (yes i did see the vents) are the same as for any commercial building. look up next time your are at costco. this type of ventilation is not designed for the generation of combustion byproducts. then you need to use industial rather than commercial standards. this requires some sort of hood or directed vent. light a stick of insence in the studio in the same location as a torch. if anyone can smell it at all, your ventilation is not safe.

what i should have mentioned is all that is right about it, your metal bench top, you torch plumbing...unfortunately for me, this i kind of how i communicate...not the best, and usually too brief.

please do not leave LE on my account...there are lots of friendly people here, some more friendly than me.

Quite frankly I think many of you are really clueless to whats being said here.... Friend ship is great, and it great you want to standup for a place you obviously like...

But with 10 torches running the ventilation capacity needs to be about 8-10,000 cfm and the few ceiling vents I can see is obviously are not enough....

On technical side and safety side you might want to read up on "Carbon Monoxide Poisoning" and "Nitrogen Oxides" (NOX)... Before you take the attitude and battle position you seem to have chosen...

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=nitrogen+oxides

Mark, myself and some other don't always agree on some things but any thing that can cause you harm (respiratory illness) physical burns, physical pain to others a few more assorted nastiest takes uppermost in out consciousness and we dare to speak out because we first of all want to keep you safe, second of all we do not want terrible thing happening to people in our "industry" that gets attentions of "government" and brings down safety regulation that are painful, hard to accomplish and will absolutely ruin the "spirit" of our "industry"...

Obviously you have no clue to where the 'Safety Forum' is located or have been reading anything in it... Where there is at least 45 pages of documentation to help improve your studio lives and to keep safety...

http://www.lampworketc.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=39

Dear ones, its not all glitz, glamor and skills at the torch, there are hidden things that can hurt you or kill you out there and some are invisible to the naked (uneducated ) eye...

Yes I have read all the comments up to this point, and Mark may be gruff and impersonal but that is the way I am also.... I will not back down for my comments so condemn if you will but it only shows your indifference to the health and safety to yourself and those around you ....

Laserglass, manners don't cost a thing and knowing you are gruff should, as an adult, make you take a step back and think before you post. I try to put myself across in forums as I would wish to be treated, fairly and kindly, as you would in everyday life.
As you have never visited the studio I dont think you are the right man to make judgement, not knowing the power of the system that is in place. A few well directed questions would be better.
Gruff and rude are 2 very different words, with two different meanings, looks like someone needs to check his own grades before dishing an F to someone else.

You misunderstand stand...

On the scale "A" to "F" as grading in school, this system gets a "F" Grade...

Mark myself and most other are actually civilized enough to know there is no need to use the "fxxx" words...

Amazingly, I was googling lampworking forums and came across this one today. I registered. I saw a thread by Emma at Tuff's and went straight for it as I bought my kit from them. I can't quite believe how quickly some people have "turned" on Emma. It's not a great introduction to what I was hoping would be a friendly forum. I hope this isn't the norm.

I saw those but they are not a capture system which is of course what is needed for combustion fumes.

I did compliment you on your beautiful studio. No one CONDEMED YOU. We all pointed out the obvious. We were concerned about safety. That's all. These safety remarks are made to everyone who posts studio pics.

WHat really bothers me is how quickly you got off track and immediately made disparaging remarks against my nationality!!! That was far worse then our being concerned for your safety. WOW. Why did you have to bring that into the conversation? It seems to me you were ready to pounce on Americans????

I always find it interesting when people criticize others studios. Have you been there? Do you know the inner workings of her ventilation system? If you have been there, looked it over and deemed it inadiquite...then, OK say it fails. But just looking at a picture? You don't know all the details. It could very well be just fine.

You don't know.

Beautiful studio!!

Has anybody actually asked Emma what the capacity of the ventilation system is, instead of criticising it from the outset ?

I don't know what the maths is for this particular system, but we do have experts in this field over here in the UK too ... I'm pretty certain that the system is more than adequate. Tuffnell's would NEVER skimp on safety.

Emma and the team at Tuffnells are a very professional and knowledgeable company. We have lots of regulations in the UK which apply to businesses - I can't imagine for one moment that Tuffnells would risk their business - let alone their own health and that of their customers and friends, by installing inadequate ventilation.

I appreciate that some of the posters in this thread are concerned for the general safety of people, however - you have made your point. You consider the ventilation to be inadequate - others (who have seen it and have direct experience of it) do not have an issue with it.

So why not leave it there - agree to differ, move on. Please do not drag this post down any further. This kind of bickering seems to drive many people away from this forum, which is a great shame.

Emma - to the original topic - your studio looks wonderful, full of light and with a great set up. I hope you have lots of fun and success with it. I hope to visit myself, although it's a long way from where I live.

Peace guys!

Ahhhhhhh, what a cluster *&^% -_- I won't touch it with a stick. BUT I will add this

Emma your space is really awesome, with you the best of luck. As far as the ventilation? It doesn't look adequate. BUT looks are VERY deceiving!!! I'll bet you a hundred times over if I took this picture to any other forum and asked about the ventilation you would get the same answer 90% if the place is full of glass artists. Once you came back with I had a profesional my mind was dead at ease. Some people assume way too much BUT at least they assume

I still come to Le because of certain artists, the garage sale and that's about it. The drama, fluff and other &*$&# I log on out, don't even comment. Take it for what it is, enjoy what you can get out of it and then move on. You'll make some new friends here and there and get some good info that has taken years and years to accumulate. You don't stop going to the library because of the head librarian or the people putting away the books! You come in , get what it is you need or want to look at, then run on out peace!
