Default murrini - getting the center to show nicely

I "think" I'm getting pretty good at applying - and even making my own murrini (thanks to several excellent tuts by Mary, Astrid, ccglass and others), BUT I seem to be unable to keep the center showing - the murrini "domes" right away and the center almost disappears.

Does anyone have any tips? I think I might be cutting the murrini too long for one thing. Maybe I start making the murrini with too small a core - any specifics would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I don't heat them after applying them. I cover them with clear then heat.

Here is some examples

Heat, press, heat, press, then I apply some clear, heat, press. Done.

If it is doming right away, you might want to back off of the heat. It really should only be barely moveable when you are pressing it down.

Yes - I have better luck when I am covering with clear, but when I try to melt flat on the bead surface, I can't seem to preserve the center. Guess I'm not fast enough - or I heat too fast - or both

After I have put the murrini on the bead, I don't apply any direct heat. I make circles with the flame around the murrini to gently heat it. I then use a butter knife to press the murrini into the bead surface. I touch the heated murrini with the butter knife, but I do not press it in for a second. This kind of chills the surface of the murrini so it doesn't get distorted. I repeat the above until the murrini is as flat as I want it. I rarely use clear. I hope that helps.

What Kari said. Be very very gentle with the heat and in between each pass in the flame, touch the surface of the murrini with a cold tool. Don't press, just cool it down.
