Applying and storing murrini in cane form
I don’t post very often but spend a lot of time on LE. I‘ve learnt so much here and want to give a little back, I hope this is useful.
When using murrini, I like to keep it in cane form rather than cutting it up. I add a murrini to the top of my canes and keep them in jars. I can see at a glance which cane is which.
1) Make murrini, set aside.
2) Make a paddle on the end of a rod (I mostly use clear). As you can see from my photo, I don’t use my best clear, it’s a good chance to use up some of the scummy clear sitting around gathering dust
3) Keep paddle warm in top of flame while gently bringing murrini cane into flame, you want to just soften the end (you don’t want it to ball up too much).
4) Push cane onto flattened surface of paddle and allow to cool until no longer soft.
5) Cut the cane with nippers as close to the paddle as you can get. (photo's added day later - different murrini)
6) melt in, squeezing gently between mashers.
7) Join the paddle onto the end of the murrini cane, this needs to be joined well.
Using rod nippers, cut between the clear rod and the applied murrini and melt the end smooth. Use mashers again if you need to. Heat the join and paddle gently, like you would when removing chill marks, you want a nice even heat through the whole thing, it will be less likely to crack later.
9) Allow to cool slowly, don't put down onto cold surface. I hold mine and then put it on a rod rest, but vermiculite would be better and annealing better still.
Now you’re ready to add them to a bead, just follow steps 3-6 using a bead instead of a paddle.

Very neat! And at a quick glance you have a good idea how your murrinni will look on the bead!

That's such a great tip. I have tons of pharmacy bottles holding murrini chips and they are taking over my studio. Thank you for sharing!

I love that idea and, speaking as someone who's just fallen in love w/making murrini, I am especially grateful!

What a fantastic idea - thanks so much for sharing! Murrini are still on my to do list, but I will definitely use your idea when I finally get time to play with them.

Brilliant! 1) you know what murrini you are applying and 2) you know what end you can put in your mouth when cutting.
