Default Vortex marble-point to edge of cone or edge to point?

I've always made my vortex marbles by putting my lines from the edge of the cone to the point, but every tut I've ever seen says to go from the point to the edge of the cone. Also when I start my line at the edge I work off of the 7mm rod of color and pull it thinner as I lay the line down from the edge to the point. This gives me a vortex where the lines start out thick and get thinner, which looks better to me than having the lines the same thickness from top to bottom. How do y'all do it, and WHY?

I go edge to point too, but then twist and pull, which I think probably makes the lines thinner...

I always go point to edge. Keeps from having too much extra glass at the tip of the cone which gives it more depth.

I usually use 4mm rod or smaller to make my lines. I don't taper them or anything like that.

Yep. I find also if you go from edge to point, that sometimes you can inadvertantly trap a bit of air and end up with a bubble right where you don't want it.

I have always gone point to edge as well, however i am having a problem lately. After i lay my color on my rod and gather it up, i do my twist. But in the final product the lines in the vortex bulge up and merge together, instead of fine twisted lines. Any thoughts? I dont compress it or anything on the twist, just try to get it nice and even. And i always pull the tip off a bit, maybe pull a lot more off? Thanks guys.

I don't pull any off the tip. You can make the tip disappear or go transparent by doing that. They will overlap a little at the point, but I don't think that effects the finished product. I actually like the way that looks.

These are done that way:

I greatly appreciate all your input, especially the WHY comments. I'll try some going point to edge and report back.

Default 2 Vortex Mibs going edge to point

Boy was I dazed and confused when I looked at this picture that I just took
and realized that my vortexes go both ways-sometimes I turn them forward and sometimes back! Anyways, these both go from edge to point. The yellow and orange one is the first crayon color one I've done using onyx to separate each stripe of the crayons. I liked it so I did two more...

I wouldn't bother using a color in between the stripes. Just cover the entire cone with a dark background color. Makes things a lot easier.

I guess either way (point to edge or edge to point) will work fine.

Actually I never cover the entire cone with a dark background color so as to get 'dark' to separate the stripes. What I do is I stripe the entire cone, and then it doesn't matter what color I use to 'bulk up' the cone. The only diffuculty I have doing it like this is that sometimes, if I'm using 3 colors in a sequence I might run short of room around the cone to complete the sequence. Come to think of it I don't see how you could cover the entrie cone with stripes if you go from point to edge, but going edge to point it's easy to cover the whole cone. When I start at the edge my stripe is a good 1/4" wide. As I pull the color rod down to the point I thin the line down to zero wide. Just goes to show that there are a lot of ways to 'skin a cat'.

If you go from point to cone, you can space them out better. There may be overlap at the tip, but you'll never notice it in the finished piece.
