Transparent Black
Is there a transparent black in a 104 coe that is actually black and not a dense transparent amethyst? ~ Aleta

Reason: I got bored waiting for a reply so I added the word transparent after the word dense and before the word amethyst.

CIM Hades. All blacks are transparent, I think.

What's the scoop on Vetrofond Transparent Black? I've heard conflicting reports.

Oh so this Vet Trans Black could be similar to the Morreti Cobalt Night Transparent!

Aleta, what do you want use the black for? Do you have a specific purpose in mind?

I plan on having a clear core then, a layer of trans black, and then encase in clear. I want the black to have a bit of transparency to it. I just don't want the purple attributes in it like you would get with Moretti Black. Just looking for a sheer black. They make Dark Grey Transparent, so there ought to be a nice black trans.

I thought that CiM Hades had a reputation of being a "dense" black.

Hades is a really dense neutral black...I use it on all my murrini for that reason
Hmmm, I believe Vetro black is more blue than purple...batch to batch I dunno if that's still what I remember....it's been a while. I'll have to whip out the Vetro. black to be sure. Eff. is more purple, that is true. Perhaps CiM Tuxedo or the other black Uniques Frantz has? I've never used them but I know they're defined as a less dense black. I know what you mean though...less color tint, more transparent neutral grey/black, right?
The Uniques were just released, so I hope someone has some experience here.

I used some tuxedo (CIM) on ends of a bead, and found the ends to be rather wispy (it was over clear) - that might be a little more along the lines of what you are looking for? It was black too - not blue, greenish or purplish.

CiM Tuxedo would get my vote. But I also like Vetrofond very much, it's not as blue as the Effetre is purple (if you know what I mean).

I've got a rod of Hades, so I'll have to try it out. I don't have the Tuxedo, but it does sound interesting!

Where Effetre black goes purple, for me Hades goes green. <shrug>

The other thing about vetro black - if you work hot and/or long it can pit so depending on what you are using it for....
Basically you gotta have all the blacks depending on what you are doing with them. At least that is how I am!

Are you willing to try a different COE? I have several rods of the Gaffer veiled cane that Val Cox had pulled 5 or 6 years ago (96 COE). It's as close to a 'transparent' black as I've ever seen, though you may need more than one layer to achieve what you're talking about.

Exactly what I was thinking as I was reading the thread! Gaffer is gorgeous--I'm sure you could even just get one of the blacks & make your own "veiled" bead--probably Gail Joseph could tell you what color solid to get if you wanted to wrap soild black over clear, but she also sells a black veiled cane now--I got a couple pieces in the bag of mixed "odds" I ordered with the gift certificate I won from her! Her cane is gorgeous, just like Val's is (and they're both compatible with each other--which is great if you score them in the garage sale )
