Coring beads by hand
I was wondering if anyone silver cores beads by hand? If you do this frequently can you give me an idea about how many you can core in an hour?
I am also curious if it is easier to core by hand (instead of a press) if the bead holes are not perfect? I was reading on Jim Moores website and it basically said the holes need to be perfect or almost perfect to use his machine to it best capabilities.
Do the holes really make a difference? I have some neat odd shaped beads I would like to core....maybe those should be copper electroformed?
Thank-you much

I tired coring by hand and found it to be pretty tough. It got easier once I annealed the tubing. I don't think the beads need to be any more perfect to use the Jim Moore tool than they do to core it by hand, but maybe others with more experience hand coring will chime in.
I think what makes the biggest difference is not having any pointy bits of glass around the hole. The bead will end up breaking if there is a bit of glass jutting out. Does this make sense?
Hope it Helps!

If the holes are not perfect, or a bit uneven, I personally will not core them unless I put caps on the ends. They will crack or the coring will be all wonky. Adding caps is the perfect solution. I have never cracked a capped bead when coring it. I think it's impossible. I don't think coring it by hand would make a difference.

I agree with this. If there are any pointy bits, the bead will crack and if the end is uneven, the coring will be wonky. You can manually tap it down a bit so it looks better.

I think it's easier to use a tool (Jim Moore's is my preference) because you're fairly assured the pressure on the tubing will be perpendicular to the tubing, and it's a whole lot faster. I will often times do some finishing by hand with my hammer so the ends of the core are a bit rounded.
I also agree with both of Lenora's points about bead ends and using bead caps.

My DH and I read the posts and discussed it and we both feel the tool is the way to go.
Thank-you so much for the answers...I need to fill up my piggy bank!!

Hi Lorraine, I know it is a bit late but I cored all my beads by hand and even after doing quite a few it still took what seemed like an inordinate amount of time to do it well.
The ends still need to be about perfect to do it by hand, unless you are going to cap them which I never did.
I now have a tool to help me along and it goes much more quickly. I have to admit though, I like knowing that I know how to do it by hand if I have to, or if the bead I want to core isn't the right sized hole to use the tool. Most of my cores were for pandora bracelets but I have all the dapping equipment to core any sized bead hole.
If you are going to be coring mostly beads of the same core size- a tool is perfect. If you are going to be coring all different sizes it would serve you well to learn how to do it by hand.
Best of luck.
~~Mary

Thank-you Mary...not too late either. DH has been working silver a long time and wants me to try by hand first...so I will do so under his watchful eye.
Thank-you for the answer. I am much more of a builder so doing the whole thing by hand has its appeal for me. But once the money is available I will get some help with a coring machine...LOL
Wish me luck..

Came across my old thread..just wanted to give a quick update. Coring by hand is easy peasy and I luv doing it. IT goes fast and is fun for me.
I will always do it by hand. Before you spend a lot of money try it first. It may be easier for some than others. Also some may want to do a lot of beads fast, so the machines do have their place too.

I know about the dapping block & rawhide hammer. Can I ask what other tools you would need for coring by hand?
Thank you!

You need an anvil or similar surface on which to work.
Merry Christmas!

Oh good, I happen to be lucky enough, someone gave me one years ago! Never have used it. They gave it to me because they knew I loved small scale things!

Here's a link to a great FREE tutorial that I wish I'd seen sooner! Makes the whole process much less intimidating to watch someone else do it. http://www.dawnandevan.com/silver_core.htm

That's the one I watched and decided I could do it by hand too! I love his mini instructionals. And you will be able to see all of the tools you will need.
