Default portable ventilation

I want to use this just so I can start torching before figuring out what I will put in permanently:

http://www.harborfreight.com/8-inch-...tor-97762.html

I watched a few youtube videos introducing it, but i cannot figure out where I need to put it? If I need to get the tube with it? where the system go and where does tube go?

Has anyone tried one of these as a temporary solution? Does it work? How do I set it up?

Thanks!

The link no longer works. If it is the yellow vent fan and flexible hose ( I know...) this is what I use with a Barley box and it it passes the incense test for me. Let me know if this is what you are talking about and I will take a photo of my set up for you.

Blower

http://www.harborfreight.com/8-inch-...tor-97762.html

And duct....

http://www.harborfreight.com/8-inch-...uct-97763.html

Not the best solution but workable on temporary basis... By the time you spend this much money you are almost to the cost of permanent fan and ducting....

I like to work outside but I do have a little studio inside and this is what I have. It really seems to work fine. It pulls so much that it exceeds what is usually recommended I believe even with the flexabe vent. I sit the unit outside the window, it's loud! I cut the vent in third and have it rigged up inside, quite close to the torch, about 2 foot away or so.

Thanks Dale for the links. That is the unit I am referring to =)

I would love to have something more quiet and permanent. But I am just so confused with all the information!

I would love to see some photos of your set ups with this portable ventilation!

Dale, I know this has been asked many times before, but what are the first steps to the whole process.

Thanks!

well, technically, my ventilation system is portable. it was designed to sit on top of a table. all that is required is 120v power, and a place to vent. i built the ventilation system on top of a black and decker portable work bench. it all sits on top of a 4 foot buffet table, covered with both cement wall board and granite squares. the baffles are also cement wall board so the entire work area is fire proof.

Thanks Mark! I didn't know that the portable vent was that small.

And Thanks Dale for the links. I actually read through them once already. I'm gonna take a deep breath and read through it again! Because I am still very confused. xP Doesn't help when I have 2 toddlers demanding my attention every 3 minutes....

i think most of us start incrementally and learn by doing. my system started with a portable system and has been evolving over time. nothing wrong with how your intending to start off.

I also saw this in one of the forums (please see photo attached)... How does it compare with the:
The boxed in hood system with Metal sheet frame?
The box-fan against window system?

And where is the fan?

This is my space, 168in by 138in with 8ft ceiling, I have windows around all 3 sides. However, not all of them open (the previous owner of the house painted some of them shut). But if they do open, they open up like the bottom window. With all these windows, I thought the box fan system would work best, so I do not need to drill holes in the wall for the duct.

shelbelle72 had recommended this fan, is it too powerful?
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...5673%2d%5f%2dN

Would this be better?

Larry, how did you set it up? Is the fan outside? what kind of fan are you using? and did you have to put a hole in the wall?

The fan is inside mounted to the wall on a bracket and it exhausts through an existing vent in the outside garage wall. The fan is rated around 900 CFM which pulls air through about 20 feet of 8" hard ducting.

Thanks Larry, looks like it won't be a good idea for me to drill a hole for the duct. So my only option now is venting through the window.

I went to Home depot and the sales associate has no idea what a baffle board is. I am trying build this:
http://www.artglassanswers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=90

Is this the same as a baffle board? The description says that it is for insulation:
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1...kuId=202939003

Can I build a box out of metal sheets? If I can, any advice how I can do that?

Thanks!

The foam board shown on Art Glass Answers site is foil covered, same as the material the HD site shows... Does not have to be that thick though.... 1/2 or 3/4 inch is fine...

Yes you can make hood out of metal.... Almost any material not highly flammable is ok, the main effect is to guide/channel the air flow and in some cases structural support for a light fixture (inside hood) or a fan ..... Foam and wood is ok, but metal is actually preferred, but for some its more difficult to work with...
