just attempted a couple of boro items....
I'm a soft glass beader, but I have a small stash of boro glass. Last night I tried to make an off mandrel item-I have a Firebird torch-and the boro started getting little bubbles and pitting! I didn't think this happened with boro. I also didn't think my torch got that hot. Is there something I need to know about borosilicate? I've made small beads and not had this problem. I don't know the brand of the boro because a friend just gave me some, but it was a translucent jade green and a light periwinkle. This did not happen with a color that was called Silver Moon, I think. I'm sorry I don't have more info right now. I'm just trying to understand the pitting/bubbling.
Thanks in advance

Those colors just boil easy, along with all the crayon colors. Silver Moon and other silver and exotic colors melt fine.

Yeah - they boil easily. To keep them from boiling you have to work them back in the flame. like instead of 2" from the tip, go to maybe 4" or more. Yeah - it won't heat up as fast, but it won't boil either. I hated the crayons so much for so long, until I found (don't as me where I found them) the patience to work them far back in the flame. You can also try encasing them in clear.

Crayon colors, by the way, are the opaque solid colors made with cadmium (go to Glass Alchemy's website to see where they got their name). They don't change color under normal conditions (so, only when I burn them) and work best at lower temperatures.
I'm explaining this because when I was first starting to learn to work with glass and someone told me to try some of the crayons, I was VERY confused until someone told me they were talking about glass...

Thanks for the info, everyone! I think I'll set aside the crayon colors for the moment!
AuntD-I'm a D.C. native! I laughed when I saw your signature line! I left that madhouse a couple of years ago!

Madhouse! Yes! You put your finger right on the perfect description! It's cold and rainy and dark and the middle of rush hour, so that especially describes it right now, but yes, it's pretty much an all-the-time thing. But it's in my blood, and after more than 22 years I still adore driving up the GW Parkway on a nice summer night looking at the monuments all lit up on the other side of the river. And you can't beat Spring in DC. I like to think of it as Mother Nature's early apology for Summer .

Yeah, I loved driving along the downtown part of Rock Creek Park in the spring, with the cherry blossoms, but after 48 years, I just had to get out. The traffic was so much more horrendous than it used to be, and I was personally supporting Ward 3 in parking fines....sheesh!

Do you remember when politics was fun and not cutthroat the way it is now? When you could discuss differences of opinion with practically anyone and people laughed instead of getting mad? That's what I miss.

I remember when you could actually drive around without pulling your hair out cause of all the traffic! I have to say, though, I don't miss the rat-race!
LOL!
