Default clear glass

Hi, I've been out of glass making for a while, and I'm looking for a good clear glass to encase. I like new clear, but not certain who makes it.

Merry, here's one of the most recent discussions on clear:

2013 clear

There are quite a few threads on this subject; a search pulled up 12 pages!

http://www.lampworketc.com/forums/se...archid=8405128

As for me, I use several different ones depending on what I'm making or even just what is on my bench at the time. My overall favorite is Double Helix Aether, but since it's pricey, I use others as well.

Hi Merry and welcome back!

Since you are a long standing member, I'm sure you recognized that the looks of surprise and giggles above are because there seems to often be discussions about clear - what's new, what works, etc. - and with new clears being available within the last year or so, we are all often on a quest for perfect clear or at least clear that works well in each of our specific applications. As such, there have been many threads started and debated, and with new clears arriving, even more discussion arises!

With that said, can I ask what type of glass are you using these days and what type of torch? That might help us to make suggestions. Also, please feel free to post in my recently started thread - Teri's first link in her post #4 above or at least check it out and see what others are saying and suggesting.

I love Zephyr (second quality) - It's perfect! I use Aether for my silver glass encasement. They're both made by Double Helix.

What she said. I expect someone to come in and get cranky. (no, I don't know who, just know this is a touchy spot for some)

You can also use plain old Effetre clear large diameter rod, peel the outer skin of glass away, and use the inside for beautiful encasing.

I've been using Effetre super clear and Double Helix's Zephyr. I want to try the Uroboros 104 and the Reichenbach clear, too.

Snooping, I can't resist a clear thread! Vinegar and warm salt water for mine, until I realized what a pain this is. Sleeve works okay too.

I agree about DeAnn's gracious post ... no need to be snarky about something as challenging as finding a good clear for encasing. Nice to know there's a new thread about the latest offerings.

I don't pickle (yeesh!); I just use alcohol on a paper towel to clean my glass. I put it in an old spray bottle to make it easy.

Off to check out the new thread.

Thanks, everyone!

I think it has been shown that pickling damages Double Helix clears. They are really nice and clear though, and should not need further treatment.

You take your tweezers and in the flame grab and peel off the scrummy & bubbly glass you can see.

I just found this video showing it.
Click on the one for making paperweights. It is just a part of the clip, but it helped me know what people were talking about.

I have to say, that as fascinating as I found watching the videos, I don't know that I'll ever try it myself. If I have some yucky clear, I just put it on the inside of the beads.

I don't have any of these problems because I don't encase! Never have in ten years of making beads so I probably never will. I feel a little sorry for everyone for which this issue has caused such a dilemma. The main reason that has scared me away from encasing colors is the incompatibility issues between the clear layer and the base colors. The only brands of glass I would really feel safe with encasing would be either Uroboros with its own clear line, or Bullseye with their own. These glasses are compatibility tested.

Going waaayyyy back on the "problems with clear" history, I remember when it first it started with Lauscha, and then the ASK clear, and then the this brand and the that brand... So I said to myself - to hell with it, I won't bother. I have never had a customer report back to me that my beads cracked, and I definitely don't want to have to worry about it happening with encased beads.

I love, love, love the new Uroboros 104 clear. And Double Helix Zephyr and Aether (I buy the seconds) are both amazing, but are more pricey than Uroboros, which is reasonably priced and very clear. Melts like buttah!

Very basically, you heat just the outside skin of the glass and use a tool to scrape the melted outer layer down and pull it off.

This is really the best way to avoid compatibility issues if your base bead is made of Effetre.

Thank you for all the input. And I apologize for not checking the other threads before I posted my question

I purchased a selection of clear glass, and I'll see what works for me.

Thank you again.
