Default Satake Glass & Hothead

I emailed Dogma glass about being able to use this glass on a Hothead and this is the response I got from Chris.

I am really excited to try it and just wanted to share.

Tamara -

Have we used a hothead? You betcha - we ain't kidding when we say it
melts like buttah. In fact, in a lot of ways, using a hothead on
Satake
is easier than on a propane/oxy setup, since the melting point is lower
than moretti/bullseye/etc, and the hotter flame on the oxy setup is
almost too much for the Satake. In fact, Japanese beadworkers using
Satake use straight air compressors with propane, and get really
amazing
results.

The lower heat of the hothead gives you greater cushion against boiling
and fading of colors (which is esp bad on the reds and pinks) since you
can't put as much heat on your gather, even if you wanted to! And like
Jeff Barber says in his album on our sajiki,

http://sajiki.dogmawglass.com

working with Satake teaches you patience, cause you just can't rush it
with more heat.

We will be getting in our BIG shipment of the soda glass colors (66 of
them) hopefully by mid May, and when we do you can look thru all the
available colors we will have and you can see if you want to take the
plunge with a sample pack, or just pick your favorites!

I've played with the Satake in a HH.

It does melt like "buttah"! Smooth and creamy....
Just remember to cool it longer when you are done making your bead -
I made a big hollow and didn't cool it long enough so I ended up with
a hollow lentil! LOL

Have fun!

I ordered my sample set yesterday....cant wait to get it. Hopefully I won't be nervous to use it and just let it sit on my work bench.

Thanks for the tip!

Does it burn up? Get sooty? I was playing with some of my morettio opalinos/alabasters that I never use to get a feel for working with softer glass and it got all sooty!

Your sample pack and book are already in the mail. I haven't had a problem with the Satake getting sooty on a HH. What kind of torch are you using, and what kind of fuel?

If you are on a HH with mapp you might be a little too low in the flame. Try raising up a little and see if that helps.
