I started boro 3 days ago and I absolutly love it. This is to the point where I programed my kiln to ramp down to effetre annealing temperature after 4 hours so I dont just use boro all day. I run a lynx with a ogsi 15 (or whatever) that puts out about 7lpm which is enough to get colors out of every color I have tried so far (double amber purple, most of the exotics and some other stuff). It is slow going but the beads are so nice. Anyways, the only way to get boro locally here involves paying 7$ a 20" rod (which im sure is too much) so does anyone know of a good place to buy boro?

You could order from the states and get it much cheaper than $7 a rod... damn, that's expensive. Try Phatty glassworks first though.

Phatty is an official distributor of alchemy and i think northstar too. He can give you some of the better prices in the country. If ur BULK ordering it will prolly be cheaper to order through the states but if ur under 10-15lbs of color itll prolly be cheaper with Chris. Dont forget there are duty charges on top of the inital cost of the glass. Youll get a bill in the mail from customs about a week after your order pass the border Hope this helps.

Default Hey Ryan.......

You'd be surprised....there are a fair number of us in Calgary working with boro....and NOT paying the ridiculous prices charged by some retail store! Almost everyone I know though is ordering straight out of the US. Sometimes we get together and combine orders, which saves on shipping, gets quantity discounts, etc.

As for courses, check out Red Deer College continuing education, visual arts.
www.rdc.ab.ca

Lauri Copeland is coming in May and she can take your color development places that you've only dreamed of! Also, check it out, Bandhu Scott Dunham will be at Red Deer, as well as Milon Townsend (all part of the Glass Art Association of Canada conference).

Peace,
Suzee

Eli, those are great!!! Awesome colors
Keep on posting pics!

On a side note: I just HAD to go to Mountain Glass yesterday and buy more glass. I feel like a kid in a candy store when I'm there! Fabulous experience BTW!
I also tried out Gary's Barracuda at A Touch of Glass, and am still not convinced about it for an upgrade from my Lynx.
Decisions, decisions.
I'll take some pics today to show my progress or........... beginner's luck!

Oh, please tell more. I was considering a change to the Barracuda (currently a Lynx) but have not used one. I just hate the thought of not using a GTT ... I really love mine and it gives me great heat and color development ... and I run it on a Onyx+ (which I read would run a Barracuda). I was only considering a change to be able to work larger/faster and yet still use my generator ... which won't work on larger GTT torches.

So, what did you like and not like about the torch?

Inquiring minds want to know ....

Kari

Hey Brent, I heard back from Gary and I am in the May class. I guess I better get to PPPing some. Do you know what torch we will be working on? I have a Piranha and am considering stepping up to a Barracuda.
From reading another thread - I guess we aren't going to be hanging out at any trashy smoky bars. If one of us might still be smoking - will ya give us a break????
Thanks all for adding to this thread. I am putting in a glass order with your rec's. The newbie beads are inspiring! Valerie

Talking Boro sweet boro

Ok, I knew I was in trouble from the second I met Lori Robbins. She turned me on to boro, gave me great instruction, free scrap, good prices on purchases. I bought a Piranha torch and already had an OG15 oxy generator - enough to get in trouble with.
So, I've been having tons of fun working with boro! Getting the colors out of it and striking and learning how to set the generator correctly have all been a challenge, but boro has bitten me big time!!!!
I have trouble going back to soft glass because it behaves so differently. But when I lose patience and want to bang out a lot of beads quickly, I go back to soft glass.
The ethereal effects from boro are amazing. I love the colors, and they are the first beads to sell whan I do bead shows.
So, thanks Lori and Brent, for turning me onto this wonderful new addiciton! Miles to go before better results are mine, but, what fun trying! I've signed up to take a class with Robert Mikleson in May, and hope to pick his brain for lots of great info from a master! Would love to do sculpturel work down the road. Bigger, better, more!!!!
Anyone who has hesitated to try boro, don't be intimidated by it. It is so much more forgiving and user friendly than soft glass, you really can abuse it. The control over color will be an ongoing education, but, so worth it!
Brent, glad to see you are starting to teach - you have the talent and the most wonderful personality to make the classes fun!

Boro on,
Chris

Gary has a Cuda you can try out. We'll be working on several different torches. Feel free to bring yours if you want to work on something familiar some of the time. It's totally OK. We'll take smoke breaks for you. I'm not going to be one of those exsmoking stick in the muds. I'll definitely still go out to bars and such... just don't give me a cigarette.

Well I am dying to try boro~~Too bad I am sidelined from my torch for the next few weeks. Pooh.
Are there any video's that show some of the basic techniques that have been mentioned? Such as montage, inside out??
I did see on a Lewis Wilson video that he uses Foster Fire.

I wouldn't jump right into inside out and techniques like that if you have never worked with boro at all.

I would first pick up Boro Bead Magic by Doug Remschneider and get used to working boro in solid applications before you go into hollow techniques. Especially with a Mini CC. While you're at it, pick up Doug's Flameworked Pendants video.

Thanks Chad. I did make a round bead on the Mini and it took too long. For me anyway. hehe! So then I made one on the wildcat and it was faster. I have the Barracuda but have not hooked it up yet or used it. I do have Doug's cd's (should have mentioned that) but am looking for info on the hollow stuff. And btw, thanks for the teaching offer. I am booked for all of 2006 but will be still around in 2007! Paula

Okay, I am getting FED up with boro! I had good luck (beginners, lol) but now??? I can't get ANYTHING other than poop!! I just don't get it. It seems the only color I can work with and have any good results, are Amber Purple. What the he$$. I wonder if I just don't have the flame chemistry right? I admit, I could get it right on the Piranha but using both on the cuda, I'm just not sure what the outside flame is supposed to look like. Are the inside candle supposed to be long while the outside candles short? See what I mean? UGH!!! Help

Carrie, your boro beads are fabu girl! You should be very proud

Chad, I have his dvd and he makes it look wayyyy to easy. It melts like butter for him. I really thought this cuda would get hotter. Maybe I just don't have the patience??? Maybe having 2lbs. of gas just isn't enough??? It is taking me f-o-r-e-v-e-r to melt this glass

I would pick up Essential Boro Beadmaking by Freeman Corbin, Blown Beads by Doug Remschneider, or Making Inside Out Beads by Shannon Hill. I have all three of those, and they are very good.

I'm sure I'll still be around in 2007. Of course, our studio will be open in a few months, so I don't know what my schedule will look like then...

Yeah, I would up the pressure a little. You are running on tanked oxygen, right? If you are on a concentrator, that would explain the lack of heat, and the problem with colors.
