Which way to spin the Mandrel !
Okay I went to a bead class and the teacher says that glass likes to go one way and when you're putting a bead on the mandrel or doing any work with the Mandrell you're supposed to only spin it one way not go back and forth.. what's everybody's thoughts on that one ??

It depends on what I'm doing. Sometimes I need to change directions to do something.

I tend to go different directions depending on what I am doing.
If you are just learning - it might be good to learn one way - then adapt as your style evolves.

In my opinion just play with it in what ever way your body wants to.
You will figure out what you are more comfortable with and the glass really doesn't care one way or the other.
Oh and in five years your body will change its opinion of what is comfortable and you will find yourself doing it the other way around.

I spin both ways constantly, even when applying glass to the mandrel I spin it one way or the other depending on what I'm building.
Your teacher probably prefers one way only but you do whatever you want !

Rotating
I was taught to always rotate a mandrel or rod
towards yourself, since there is no way you can
rotate it away from yourself without hesitating and
trying to catch up.
This can cause hot and cooler spots in the glass.
It effects how the glass will blow out if you are blowing
it.
If it has solidified some, or you are just adding some glass to
a gather, then turn it anyway you need to.
Have fun, Wayne

Hmmmm, going to have to look at this one. I mostly turn away from me. Wonder if I try this if it will change anything? I agree, with most here to do what works for you.

I turn away from myself as well (*mostly because I do both), i think it's like the toilet paper, over or under, whichever you like. I don't think it affects hot or cold spots imo, at least not with beads? They're so small, even my big honkers I can't see this causing uneven heating.

I was told to turn it away from yourself because it was safer, but around means all the way around so frankly I think that's not true. I turn either way depending on the bead. I have had nerve damage from carpal tunnel so I try not to keep the exact same motion but to change it up every so often.

As i am starting up again after a long - 9 year - time away from the torch I find that rotating both ways as I even out the bead is more successful for me. fewer high spots and more even distribution of dots etc.
IMHO

Not only do I rotate both ways, I also hold the mandrel in either hand too. Just another advantage to being left-handed
Seriously, though, at the beginning its key to find out what works for you. If you find that your dots are more even and well-positioned rotating one way with this hand, and general all-round heating of the bead works best while rotating the other way using that hand, then do that.
Your body will tell you what works for you. I'm not big on the whole 'you must do it this way, to do it properly' mindset to start with, as you might have noticed

Glass is a fluid when hot. Fluids don't care which way they're spun. Go with whatever feels right, and the rest is all practice.

1. glass does not have a preferred direction for melting, it just melts, heat and gravity determine where the molten glass flows
2. given 1. it doesn't really matter which way you spin the mandrel when applying the base bead. Personally, I spin away as I can heat the rod as well get some heat into the base right where the molten glass is "landing" on the bead.
3. after you get a base bead, apply glass any way that makes you happy I sometimes dab it on if I just want a little more mass, many times I am making a sculptural type bead and in that case you just add little dabs, streaks, dots and whatever as needed to create the desired effect.
